1. Saxby are a well-known brand within the lighting industry, when and where did it all begin? In 2001 we purchased the company name and the business began operating from a small warehouse in Northolt Middlesex. In the early days we sold a small range of lighting fixtures and lamps, sourced in the UK and from Europe but it was soon recognised that in order to compete in this market we would need to begin sourcing from the Far East.

The business slowly developed but was restricted in its growth by a limitation of space and range development. In 2010 the business was moved to its new home in Christchurch where it now benefits from the wealth of experience that its sister company Poole Lighting can offer. Now employing over 40 full time staff our radio frequency controlled 80,000 square foot warehouse and operations facility has provided the additional space we needed to improve stocks and service levels.

2. What was the inspiration behind its inception? Our group founder originally had a lamp business but recognised the market was becoming more flooded with competition and to maintain growth and future prosperity the business had to diversify into other areas.

So, in short, the inspiration was an awareness of market trend and an acceptance that change was required to move the business forward.

3. You have over 1100 products covering all aspects of the industry, what has been your biggest challenge to date? One of our key business objectives is keeping them all in stock; by far this is the biggest challenge. Our inventory control has improved dramatically and we now have 96% stock availability across the complete Saxby range. We strive to ensure that we maintain stock levels but have to balance this with ensuring we do not over

commit to products that can change in price with every order as well as improve in technology on a frequent basis, such as LED products.

4. How did you overcome it? We have invested heavily in personnel as well as new stock management software which help us to achieve optimum stocking levels across the matrix of products. The software we have invested in is an inventory and forecast management system which has been bolted onto our ERP solution and has enabled us to focus on controlling our stock much tighter. We have a team of dedicated supply chain analysts working and managing inventory by exception and making sure vendors only supply the key SKUs that our business requires.

This of course is a continual challenge as customer demand and trends change, but this is helping us achieve much higher
