Ambient lighting can enhance the setting, and be the finishing touches to a beautifully designed space. Restaurants need to play on your senses in many different ways but getting the atmosphere right can be the difference between customers returning, regardless of the quality of food.


The Botanist, Cheshire


The Botanist is a contemporary blend of industrial chic mixed with a faded colour pallet of an English potting shed. Chantelle Lighting was asked to work on this project and produce the lights that were designed by Paul Danson Imagineering.


Within the restaurant there is a chandelier with an eclectic mix of glassware intertwined with industrial metals and beads. Garden sieves that have been aged and treated create multi‐pendant lighting and enhance the industrial finish. To complement the beautiful chandeliers a mix of pendant and caged wire lighting maintains the industrial finish.


Chantelle Lighting’s managing director, Anthony Holly, said: “There is a real passion for industrial lighting at the moment and The Botanist is testament to just how striking and edgy this look can be given the right setting.”


Wasabi, Hammersmith


Wasabi first opened their doors in 2003 serving individually wrapped pieces of sushi, offering customers a wide choice and the chance to experiment with the delights of Japanese cuisine. They now have over 35 restaurants across London and plan to expand throughout the UK and overseas. iGuzzini were commissioned to work with Wasabi over a year ago with the aim to reduce energy consumption and improve the décor and atmosphere of each location. The first restaurant chosen for a makeover was Wasabi, Hammersmith. The restaurant, located within Kingsmall, was an all LED project; 50w Dichroic fittings were replaced with 14w LED Reflex Easy Square in the back of house areas. These provide an equivalent lumen output, a huge energy saving, and a life expectancy of at least 60,000 hrs at L70 as opposed to an average 2,000 hr life expectancy for a 50w Dichoric lamp.


Running from side to side in the back of house kitchen/prep area, IN30 LED was used, which is a continuous line of light that can be cut to length. The benefits of having an LED version rather than the more traditional fluorescent, is the elimination of


potential dark spots and difficult maintenance as lamp changes won’t be required. The IN30 LED produces 2800lm per linear metre so is a direct equivalent to a T5 source.


Front of house, ambient lighting was installed, in the form of the innovative, award winning Laser Blade, which is a linear LED product that produces light in a circular emission. The Laser Blade was chosen due to its low energy consumption and low glare rating, creating a soft, relaxing environment for people to enjoy their meal in. To finish off the design, smaller 10w Laser Blade’s were used to frame the heated display units and fridges, which produce beautiful silhouettes on the walls.
