saw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. “Niemann brings all of this experience to her winning article, ‘The Lost Arts,’ which de- scribes what it was like to be part of a three- person crew flat switching in a small bowl yard in San Jose, California. She emphasizes the teamwork that was required to switch cars with other crew members and how im- portant it was to have ample experience and to have ‘the habit of carefulness . . . so in- grained it became part of your character.’ “A key theme in Niemann’s article is that current-day practices with one person con- trolling an entire switching operation with a belt pack, which she describes as a ‘shoebox- sized remote-control device that operates the engine and is strapped to the operator’s chest . . . ,’ is less efficient and more danger- ous than switching with a traditional crew as in the past. She also argues that the data maintained on the safety of remote-control operations is inadequate, and that one person switching with a remote-control device simply has a compromised situational awareness. “Niemann observes that the United Transportation Union approves of using re- mote-control technology with two persons, but not with one-person crews. This is con- sistent with comments noted in the article from a switchman in Oakland who feels that the belt packs are based on ‘good technology,’ but doesn’t think they should be used by someone working as a one-person crew. “The Awards Committee felt that, while this article is controversial, it deals with a serious contemporary issue that deserves to be explored. As Dr. Niemann noted in her last paragraph, ‘If you have ever lost a fellow worker to an industrial accident, you know

that it stays with you forever.’ Thus, the committee was pleased to select ‘The Lost Arts’ as recipient of the David P. Morgan Ar- ticle Award for 2012.”

Our congratulations go out to Linda on re- ceiving this award. The article was illustrat- ed by Joel Jensen, who also teamed up with Linda on the book Railroad Noir. If you don’t have this book, seek it out. It’s a tremendous read about contemporary railroading. The R&LHS also awarded Hal Lewis with

the Gerald M. Best Senior Achievement Award for his photography and Ed Wolfe re- ceived the George M. and Constance W. Hilton Book Award for Southern Railway Appalachia Division. Our congratulations go out to all the recipients. —S.B.

R&R’s 2012 Index? We have made the decision that the maga- zine index (for 2012 and into the future) will appear as a free PDF download from the R&R website. Readers who desire a hard copy will be able to get one free from the R&R office with a stamped return envelope. We’ll let you know when it’s ready.

Summertime Fun

Railfanning isn’t all nuts and bolts and chasing trains around. Sometimes it’s good to relax, especially in the summer. We took a bit of an editorial break with this, our Au- gust issue, exploring two subjects that even non-train members of your family can en- joy — the railroad at the incredible Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio and the most famous rail trail in the country, New York’s High Line Park. We hope you enjoy these summer treats. —S.B.
