the street running on South 8th Street, to work the Richmond Power & Light facility. The conductor precedes the train in a company truck during the en- tire trip, and the need to ride the hind end of the move is eliminated as the conductor drives ahead of the shove down South 8th Street. Following the line from Cottage Grove to Richmond is easy with a good map.
My second chance to follow the IERR occurred on May 24, 2013. The crew re- ported for duty at Cottage Grove at 8:30 a.m. and consumed much of the morning making up their train. They also worked the CSX interchange in the small yard located along the former B&O Indianapolis Subdivision at the east end of Cottage Grove. The B&O position lights and C&O signals are nice props at the Cottage Grove dia- monds (and are slated for replacement very soon).
The southbound chase has several
great locations to work into your shots. A nice grain elevator is located at Bath, Ind. A classic Midwestern farmhouse near the tracks is located a short dis-

tance south of there. The ideal angle of the farm house is from private proper- ty, but when I approached the home owner he gladly gave me permission to enter. His dog seemed to be familiar with this activity! The roads do not directly follow the
line at times, but with some scouting several nice angles can be found. The Okeana Trestle
is a highlight, but lighting is difficult during the midday,
which means settling for a backlit or silhouette shot.
The IERR crew and office staff are friendly and helpful, but they take a dim view of trespassing and reckless behavior. With that in mind, the un- mistakable sound of non-turbocharged EMD’s are a pleasure. But one never knows when the Respondek painters will catch up, so don’t wait too long for your second chance in Indiana!
