ABOVE: Probably the best photo location on the railroad is from behind Camp Snoopy where the tracks cross the longest bridge on the line. This scene is best lit when the first trains of the day are running. RIGHT: Loco- motive No. 3, Albert, is now on semi-perma- nent display at the Cedar Junction station.

Station it operates in a wide grassy area with short fences on either side. Since the train is running due south at this point, this location is good all day. And late morning is also a good time to get the train as it arrives and sits in the station at Frontierland, as the shadows in this area will be receding. As the sun gets high, it’s a good time to pack the cameras away and enjoy a ride or two. Lockers can be found adja- cent to Millennium Force (near the Funway Station, $4.00 per two hours), and this coaster is one of the best in the country. Hop on! This is also a good time to grab lunch and a bunch of quarters. One of the best shots of the railroad can be had in the afternoon from the ob- servation platform for Shoot the Rapids. Trains pass here with both the water ride and multiple coasters in the background. As an added bonus, there are eight water cannons located here and for a quarter (I told you to get a bunch of quarters) you can blast unsus- pecting riders on Shoot the Rapids. Other afternoon shots include the ap- proach to Funway Station and a grassy

area under Millennium Force just west of and across the tracks from Funway Station with the shop and water tank for a backdrop.

Planning Your Trip There are many places to stay both at

the park and in nearby Sandusky. Main line railroads are quite close by, with Norfolk Southern’s busy ex-New York Central route passing through

Sandusky.

Amtrak

has

four

daily

trains through town, although one gets in after 11:00 p.m. and the other three all arrive between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. The Wheeling & Lake Erie serves near- by Huron. As you can see, a multi-day family trip can be had at Cedar Point, and you can get plenty of railfanning in both at the park and while your family is enjoying a second day of coasters and water rides. Enjoy!
