lot of things had to happen for mechanical engineer John Giraldo to be able to get to where he is today—at Sandvik Coromant’s Aerospace Application Center in Fair Lawn, where he works as a CAM Programmer and where his “contribution to increasing the global competitiveness of North American manufacturing has been astound- ing,” according to his colleague, Sean Holt. How John got there—across linguistic, national and economic barriers—is not only a good story, it’s a modern version of this country’s oldest story: that of someone coming to its shores to create a better life.
aniil Popov graduated at the top of his high school class in 2011 but wasn’t sure which way to turn after graduation. Daniil, who at the age of four had moved to Washington from Uzbekistan with his family, figured he would take a job in the family tile-setting business and help his parents with the bills. A 90-hour internship at Frito-Lay in Vancouver, WA, changed all that, however: Daniil was introduced to Six Sigma, lean practices, and the world of manufacturing—and, with other interns, saved the com- pany an estimated $400,000 by improving processes and minimizing waste.

y the time you read this, Ronald Olkowski will be in Leipzig, Germany, representing the United States in
the CNC Turning competition during the biennial WorldSkills Competition—the Olympics of vocational skills. The 42nd international event is being held July 2–7. Ronald won a bronze medal in CNC Turning in November 2012 during the WorldSkills Americas competition in Brazil and medaled twice in US competitions in 2009 and 2010. He’s also received Ferris State’s College of Engineering Technology Student of the Year award for 2011–2012. Here’s hoping things are turning out well for him in Leipzig.
n 2008 Dow Chemical named Lotheronie Raby—then 23 years old, and a full-time employee for only two years—to the role of Global Technical Resource Leader for Heat Ex- changers. In this role she leads a network of global experts who provide reviews of complex designs, troubleshoot failures in operations, and maintain Dow’s standards for Heat Exchanger design and fabrication. Dow’s David Kafer, who recommended Lotheronie for 30 Under 30 recognition, points out that “to gain the confidence and trust of a global network comprised of members who all have 15-plus years of experience is quite an accomplishment.” We agree.
