fton Hollertz traveled the world before she was 23 doing factory audits. But it was when she returned to
her hometown and joined Allmand Bros. Inc., a 75-year-old manufacturer of light-duty construction equipment, that her creative thinking and passion for the production side of manufacturing became apparent. Afton raised the bar within Allmand with her ability to think creatively and her drive to improve processes and products. As Continuous Improvement Manager, Afton oversaw a 40,000 square foot addition to the plant, streamlined material flow, and is in the process of gathering data to better understand operational efficiency.

MTS, as our readers know, is a major event in the manufacturing world: The biennial trade show is the largest event of its kind in North America. When a major international company has a new robotic manufacturing solution to reveal and demonstrate at the show, you know they’ll do everything they can to make certain that nothing goes wrong. So what kind of experienced, talented material- handling expert would such a company trust to lead such a project? In 2012, Fanuc Robotics turned to a 20-year-old student intern named Amanda Nixon—who came through with flying colors.

ody Leuck has already won enough awards to stress a mantelpiece. The 23-year-old CSU-Chico grad has taken First Prize in the Center for Entrepreneurship’s 2010 business concept competition, helped to lead teams to back-to-back Grand Prizes in SME’s Collegiate Manufactur- ing Challenge in 2011 and 2012, and won the 2012 SME Education Foundation Reality Redesigned contest. In his spare time, he interned at an aerospace manufacturer— and even cofounded a start-up skateboard company.“What I like about manufacturing is how all of the incremental steps, those small, painstaking efforts, can result in a fan- tastic finished product,” Cody says. “It’s very satisfying.”
