From the Chairman Half Full

From track milestones to success of the first PBRIP events, Paint racing is full of opportunities for the second half of 2013.

s we reach the halfway point in 2013 and are finish- ing up with our foaling and breeding season, there are many other things happening that affect our industry. On May 31–June 1, the Racing Committee met at the annual APHA Workshop in Grapevine, Texas. The committee continues to work together to establish programs and increase opportunities for the Paint racing industry. The Masterpiece Challenge Program is now entering its second year, the Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program has recently been introduced, and the Breeders’ Trust program can return benefits to everyone involved in rac- ing. Check out this issue’s Around the Track for a Racing Committee recap and review of the first two PBRIP events, and look for Rachel Florman’s article about Breeders’ Trust opportunities for speed-bred horses in the September issue of Paint Horse Racing.

exciting racing season on the track. Situation, a 2-year-old gelding by Royal Quick Flash who was bred and is owned by Wade Leggett, is currently

leading the way with $96,451 in earnings. The multiple Champion-producing mare Game Chicken has now eclipsed the $500,000 mark in progeny earnings, thanks to Imflash- inthechicks, Imachickenkicker and Flashthechicks, who are currently holding down the No. 2–4 spots of leading money- earners for 2013. Game Chicken’s dominant 3-year-old, Imachickenkicker, has also now helped make Dos Poruno the newest member of the millionaire sire’s club.

Masterpiece Challenge The Racing Committee continues to work on making

the Masterpiece Challenge the best program available for 3-year-old Paint runners. Thanks to everyone for their involvement and assistance in making this program the success that it already is. The 2013 purse will be an esti- mated $38,000, which is an increase from the inaugural $27,000 purse. We will continue to pursue any and all opportunities to grow the purses until the Masterpiece

Challenge is the biggest race of the year for 3-year-olds. A total of 19 horses are eligible for the 2013 race; 29 are eligible for the 2014 race, and 38 are eligible for the 2015 race. If your horse is not yet eligible, enroll now. All infor- mation regarding this program is available on the website. In order to make the qualification process as objective as possible and to let owners know exactly where they stand in their attempts to qualify, the Racing Committee has established a point system and will update the rank- ings after each qualifying race. There will be six automatic qualifiers from the six qualifying races. The four remain- ing qualifiers will be the top four horses based on points who have not already qualified. This information is avail- able on the Paint Racing website as well.

PBRIP The Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program—more commonly known as “PBRIP”—is officially here and has received a fantastic reception. Its focus is to provide Paint barrel racers an opportunity to qualify for the APHA World Championship Show and earn points at barrel races where they are already participating. PBRIP gives producers of existing barrel races the opportunity to create a PBRIP sidepot and have their races sanctioned by APHA as point- earning events. Information is available on the website, and questions should be directed to APHA Director of Rac- ing Karen Utecht at (817) 222-6444. Karen, along with APHA Executive Director Billy Smith and the APHA staff, has done a great job launching this program so quickly. We’re taking every effort to make the APHA World

Show the biggest and best event of the year for Paint bar- rel racing. We are currently raising added money and are speaking with sponsors to make the initial PBRIP World Show event in November the best race possible. If you know a sponsor who might be interested in PBRIP, please contact Karen Utecht. Once again, thank you to everyone for their support in making programs available. Your continued effort will help these programs grow even more for the benefit of the Paint racing and barrel racing industries. We wish every- one continued success and the best of the luck for the second half of 2013.
