Stakes Results Maiden runner takes top prize in the Western States Futurity
In her first start, Lakota Charlene, a 2-year-old Appaloosa filly, won the 350-yard $16,715 G2 Western States Futurity on June 15 at Arapahoe Downs in Aurora, Colorado. Winning by half a length in :18.25, the filly by With Intent (ApHC) and out of Triple Dee Dee (ApHC) won the top prize of $6,853 for owner Dan Grotheer. She was trained by Martin Portillo and ridden by Fernando Camacho.
Second place went to Oso Country, a 2011 bay solid gelding by Country Quick Dash and out of Panther Pride. Dueling down the stretch, Oso Country finished in 18.35 for a speed index of 73, taking home $3,510 for owner Pamala Valencia of Rifle, Colorado. Bred by The Painted Pitchfork of Rifle, the gelding is trained by Farrell Christoffersen and was ridden by Travis Wales. Rounding out third was MG Kick Ace, an Appaloosa gelding by Blue Oyster Cult (ApHC) and out of BG The Hot Chick (ApHC). Running the 350-yards in :18.51, MG Kick Ace earned third-place money of $1,839 for owner Dr. John V. White. Trained by John McBride, the gelding was ridden by Michael Iammarino. Other horses in the field included Special Indian Cash, Kcrosskaboom, No Spots On Friday and Smoken Blue (ApHC).
