Barrel racing is quickly gaining popularity in South America and China, which will help con- tribute to a growing market for speed-bred Paint Horses in those areas.

“Chico called, just out of the blue,” Hank explained. “He said he’d seen photographs of Chasin The Money, looked at the horse’s pedigree and liked what he saw.” Though the call caught Hank a bit off guard, the price was right and Chasin The Money soon was on his way to Brazil to finish out the 2013 breeding season. Based in the Sao Paulo region in the southeastern part of the country, Chico serves as an APHA Director for Area 50, which includes Colom- bia and Venezuela in addition to Brazil. He is excited about bringing the tobiano stallion to South America. “Chasin The Money is a wonderful horse,” Chico said. “He has good conformation, a good pedigree and, so far, he’s been a very good sire. I was looking for a black-and-white homozygous stallion with racing bloodlines, and Chasin The Money puts everything together in one package. I saw some ads and looked at a few horses I didn’t like, then I flew to Montana to look at Chasing The Money. I was very excited by what I saw. “And the quality of his semen is wonderful. That’s important if you’re going to be selling breedings and shipping semen—you don’t want any problems. We had that checked before and after the sale.” Chasin The Money’s reputation preceded his arrival in Brazil, where he continues to do a nice job of selling himself. “We’ve already sold more than 80 breedings to the horse this year, with very little advertising,” the Brazilian said.

With 21,000 Paint Horses and 400,000 Quarter Horses, and an interest in events like barrel racing, Brazil seems like a ripe opportunity for owners and breeders of speed-bred Paint Horses.
