News Industry Ensuring qualifications and training meet industry demands

EMPLOYERS ARE BEING urged to help shape the future of engineering and advanced manufacturing by ensuring qualifications and training meet the needs of industry. A review of National Occupational Standards (NOS) is being led by Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manu- facturing technologies, to ensure the current standards are fit for purpose and to find out from employers and stakeholders what changes might be required. The current suites of NOS and qualifications

were developed in partnership with employers and other appropriate organisations such as the professional institutions, trade bodies, training providers and higher education. NOS set out the skills, knowledge and understanding required by employees to undertake a particular task or job role to a

‘Auto electronics’ event joins the Advanced Engineering group

A NEW SHOWhas been added to the Advanced Engineering UK group of events, which takes place at the NEC on 12-13th November. The new Auto Electronics Show is joining a line-up of co-locating events that

includes the

Automotive Engineering Show, Composites Engineering Show, the Aero Engineering Show and Printable Electronics for Industry. The Auto Electronics Show

brings together all sides of the vehicle electronics sector, combin- ing a showcase of the latest supplier technology and capability with a two day programme of free to attend technical and industry intelligence presentations. Invited exhibitors encompass

technology innovation partners, parts, components, semiconduc- tors, software and systems suppliers, plus technical part- ners supporting auto electronics design and test, manufacturing, assembly, integration, and supply chain programmes. Areas of focus will include: body and chassis electronics; powertrain and engine management elec- tronics; safety, security and driver assistance electronics; vehicle instrumentation & dis- plays; vehicle infotainment & telematics; electric/hybrid drive electronics; vehicle system net- works; and power electronics. The Advanced Engineering

UK group of events 2013 is set to build on its 2012 success, which attracted a total atten- dance of some 9,000 to an exhibitor base of 550+. www.advancedengineeringuk.com

nationally recognised level of competence, helping formalise and standardise training requirements across the UK. The NOS directly inform the quality,

content and assessment requirements of vocational qualifications especially compe- tence qualifications (NVQs) included in all Semta Apprenticeship Frameworks. Bill Twigg, apprenticeship director of Semta

said: “It is extremely important that we have a programme of continuous improvement to keep up with the rapid expansion of new technologies and processes in our sector. “We want to hear from those employers,

employees and training providers as to the strengths and any weaknesses. It is impera- tive to the future of the UK economy that we deliver world class standards, through academic and vocational qualifications

Competition! Win a copy of ‘Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing’

DESIGN SOLUTIONS is offering one reader the chance to win a copy of ‘Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing’, a new publication by Hod Lipson and Melba Kurman. ‘Fabricated’ tells the story of 3D printers and describes the emerging world of printable products, where people design and 3D print their own creations as easily as they edit an online document. Fabricated explores how 3D printing is poised to impact nearly every

part of our lives. In it, readers will meet teachers, small businesses, artists, surgeons and researchers who are applying 3D printing and innovative design software to expand the limits of what they do. Also included are the basics of 3D printing technologies and design software; ‘weird and wonderful’ applications of 3D printing; and an insight into a whole new level of intellectual property challenges as 3D printers enable people to make copies – even 'edit' – commercial products and works of art. There is also a glimpse into the not-so-distant 3D printed future. To be in with a chance to win, send an email including your name, job

title, and company name and address, to: rmorling@datateam.co.uk, with the subject title ‘June Design competition’. The competition is open to readers based in the UK only. Entry closes on 16th August 2013. Fabricated is published by Wiley, RRP £18.99.

under unified identities REGAL IS consolidating its global production into four main brands: Marathon, Leeson, Fasco and Genco. The company has acquired

a number of manufacturing com- panies over the years, generally maintaining the existing brands at least in the medium term. Lucie Hodkova, UK national sales and quality manager for Regal Beloit UK (RBC UK) and Rotor UK, said: “We have now reached a point in our development where it is beneficial for the market if we bring groups of similar motors together under unified identities.” www.regal-news.com

ACCORDING TO Vacon, around 50TWh of electrical energy was saved last year with the help of its AC drives. This corresponds to the amount of energy produced by around nine 700 MW nuclear power reactors in a year, or the annual electricity consumption of approximately 11 million house- holds in Europe. In addition, in 2012 the amount of energy produced from renewable energy sources with Vacon’s AC drives was approximately 20 TWh. The company is continuously

improving the efficiency and reliability of its AC drives by using the latest technology. www.vacon.com

• Automotive Engineering Suite 3 • Aeronautical Engineering Suite 3 • Engineering Leadership Suite 3 • Marine Engineering Suite 2 and 3 • Rail Engineering Overhead Line Equipment Construction Suite 2 and 3 The review will focus on such area as: Are

the current job roles still relevant and current in the NVQ structures? Are there any missing NOS that should be developed and be included in the NVQs? Is the content of the NOS technically correct? etc. The review is scheduled to complete by the

end of the year, including a UK wide employer and stakeholder consultation. www.semta.org.uk

In brief

Unison has received an order from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), the supplier of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of two shipbuilders of nuclear-powered submarines for the US Navy, for an all-electric CNC machine capable of bending large-bore tubing and piping up to 8in in diameter (219mm OD). The machine will be the first of its type ever built, extending the shipbuilder’s range of precision software-controlled bending facilities to include fabrication of larger diameter pipes.
