the livestock were sold last year, what’s left to sell this year? Geistweidt says, “We’ve been
real fortunate. Our draw area has expanded. We’re running from 3,000 to 5,000 sheep and goats ev- ery week. Our cattle runs have been 600 to 1,000 head, and we used to run 1,200 to 1,500. Our slowest months for the cattle business are ending, so our runs should pick up quite a bit.” Over the years, Geistweidt has
added special sales to their offer- ing, because “that’s what the people wanted,” and Shaun was instrumen- tal in getting special weaned calf and cow sales started at Gillespie. “We have special cow sales twice a year, March and September. We have a special calf and/or weaned sale the second Wednesday of each month.” The special cow sales are oper-
ated under tight guidelines. “We teeth everything. Nothing can be older than 6 years old. Almost all our cows are fi rst-calf pairs. Last time, our fi rst-calf pairs were 55 to 60 percent of the sale. The rest were bred heifers or open heifers. We just didn’t hardly have any ma- ture cows.” Will there be enough cows left in
his client area to continue the spe- cial cow sale? “Good question,” he answers. Some South Texas auction markets have closed, and Gillespie Livestock Company has picked up additional clients from the area. “We’ve been real fortunate. Our
draw area has expanded, especially for sheep and goats. We’ll go from here to Houston, down to South Texas and out in West Texas.” Same for the cattle draw area,
he says. “During the drought, we caught a lot of cattle from South Texas, especially from the people going more toward the English
