letter from the publisher A

s we look forward to Father’s Day on June 16, my thoughts swirl around the report that

the love of a father is crucial to children trying to fi nd their place in the world. I am so thankful for a dad who has contributed in so many ways to the women we four daughters have become. Our June articles echo memories

from my childhood! What contributed to our happiness—and Dad’s, I’m sure—was that he was a good listener (See page 22) and took time to hear our joys and concerns. Actually, we girls called him “the Judge” because we could always count on his questions and his reasoned responses….Also, he modeled the behavior (page 26) we daughters would come to expect from the men in our lives. We four remember one seated date who was pulled upright when shaking hands with Dad…. Whether it was early morning trips to swim practices,

cheering us on at crew races, patiently demonstrating tennis “how-to’s” or his nighttime “Billy the Bear” stories—Dad was there. And he still is at 86, asking “What can I do? How can I help?”

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

P.S. Tips on washing the car (p. 17), summer grilling (p. 34) and what to do about joint pain (p.20) if it occurs, will have “Dad appeal.”
