dress code here. Ladies are required to wear a hat, cover their midriffs and miniskirts are ‘considered unsuitable’, while gentlemen are required to wear morning dress, including a top hat. A further dress code also applies to the other areas of the course. “Te whole event is very closely linked with

the fashion world, so I think a dress code is extremely important,” says Barnett. “Our customers are actually the people who tell us that they want to know what the dress code is, and that is why we try to describe the effects of it for both the grounds and the Royal Enclosure. “Traditionally men have had to wear morning tails and a top hat and ladies have had to wear a dress with a hat, but the question of how you define what the ladies are wearing is getting much more complicated. Last year we spent a lot of time talking to people in the fashion world to get their advice. I think it’s incredibly important that everyone

knows what the dress code is, so that they can comply. People want to comply and they want to dress up, as that’s what the occasion is all about.” As part of the occasion, the race day

programme also concludes with traditional singing around the Bandstand following the last race on all five days. Visitors this year can also expect the usual performance by a military band and further musical accompaniments in several of the enclosures. Barnett concludes: “I have been fortunate to

work at some of the really great racecourses, including Aintree, Chester, Cartmel and Haydock Park, but if your job is running a racecourse then Ascot is the best racecourse to be running, as it’s the best in the world. It has very nice staff and by and large everyone is coming here to have a great time. I’ve had some wonderful days here and witnessed some of the greatest racing you could ever possibly see, with Frankel being the highlight last year.”

Royal Ascot takes place from Tuesday 18th June to Saturday 22nd June 2013. For tickets and enquiries, please visit www.ascot.co.uk.
