PRR X44 boxcars operated widely during the late steam and early diesel eras. They were of the series 86400- 86649 in revenue service from:

1952 (250), October, 1963 (246) and April, 1968 (63). The X44 cars in series 604000-604999 were in revenue service from:

April, 1952 (998), October, 1963

(989) and April, 1968 (465). By 1967 PRR had rebuilt many of its class X44 boxcars by strengthening underframes, reinforcing side-sills from bolster to bol- ster, removing running boards, relocat- ing hand brakes and applying the plain keystone lettering scheme. These rebuilt cars were assigned class X44a and X44b but retained their original numbers. Surviving class X44 boxcars were ul- timately owned by Penn Central then Conrail. For example, by December 1971 Penn Central had repainted nu- merous X44 boxcars and assigned them to series PC 261999-262899. At the same date many X44’s remained in service lettered for PRR. An extensive article on the lettering schemes applied to PRR boxcars was

April,

published by The Pennsylvania Rail- road Technical And Historical Society in the Vol. 21 No. 2 issue of its publica- tion The Keystone. The PRR class X44 cars were paint- ed PRR freight car red and may have carried as many as six different PRR lettering schemes throughout their revenue lives on the Pennsylvania Railroad. When built in 1950-51, the X44 boxcars carried the “circle key- stone” lettering scheme. Those cars re- painted between early-1954 and mid- 1954 received the “shadow keystone, Phase 1a” lettering scheme. Those cars repainted between mid-1954 and late- 1957 received the “shadow keystone, Phase 1b” lettering scheme. When re- painted between late-1957 and mid- 1960, they were given the “shadow key- stone, Phase 2a” lettering scheme. Then, between mid-1960 and mid- 1961, they received the “shadow key- stone, Phase 1b” lettering scheme. Those cars repainted between late- 1961 and 1968 received the “plain key- stone” lettering scheme. Every car was not repainted in each scheme, so older schemes could be seen concurrently with cars painted in newer schemes.
