It may seem unusual to start a review of a book about timetable and train or- der operation by talking about Central- ized Traffic Control, but here goes. I’m always impressed when I visit a model railway that has a working CTC board. I remember looking inside one once. Nev- er again. They’re electronics night- mares. I recall a feature on CTC boards in a hobby magazine many years ago in which the author noted that someone on his crew had built his CTC board, and that it took more than a year to con- struct. That’s a lot of time spent wiring and, since most of us in the hobby hate wiring (all that work under the layout and nothing looks different when you stand up), it’s time that many of us would rather spend on other aspects of model railroading. So if you have a CTC board on your layout–well done! So, when I first learned that there


was another way to organize the run- ning of trains on a layout–one that re- quired nothing more complex than some paper and a pencil–I was defi- nitely intrigued. And, almost immedi- ately, intimidated. Instead of a signal telling me whether I could move my train, I now had to read a train sched- ule (a timetable), interpret any special instructions from the dispatcher (the train orders), check the clock, do the
