www.broadway-limited.com. Broadway Limited has recently re- leased new models of the New York Central Hudson locomotives in their Paragon2 product line. Paragon2 mod- els maintain the high standard of proto- type-specific detail found in previous Paragon models, but now include an im- proved dual mode d.c./DCC sound de- coder with back EMF motor control, ad- ditional sound features, and recordable DCC operation for automated playback. The good economic times of the “roaring twenties” brought increased passenger traffic to the nation’s rail-
roads. The New York Central’s princi- pal passenger power was a fleet of 281 K3 superheated Pacifics built between 1911 and 1925. They were good for trains of nine or ten steel Pullmans traveling at mainline speeds and a maximum of twelve cars with relaxed schedules. The railroad, however, had to add additional sections to many of its trains to meet demand, increasing costs and congestion at terminals. The road tried 36 larger K5 Pacifics from the western lines built to the maxi- mum axle loading limits, but these were not the answer as passenger de- mand continued to increase. Paul Kiefer was appointed Chief En- gineer of Motive Power and Rolling Stock for all of the New York Central Lines on January 1, 1926. He was im- mediately tasked with designing and building an experimental locomotive capable of hauling 12 to 14 car trains at sustained maximum speeds over longer distances. Aware of the success of the Lima A1 Berkshire with higher horsepower from its large firebox sup- ported by a four-wheel trailing truck, Kiefer developed the specifications for a 4-6-4 with all of the latest efficiency improving accessories. The order for a single prototype was placed with Alco’s Schenectady works, and J1a 5200 was delivered on St. Valentine’s Day, 1927. The new Hudson was a beautifully pro- portioned locomotive with power and speed in a handsome package. Extensive tests demonstrated that
