been sealed, this technique could not be used. Obviously, when constructing this model, one can pre-stain and seal all of the parts before assembly except the tank wrappers which can be finished af- ter the tank assembly is complete. I was able to apply my sealed wrap- pers by first sanding the wrapper and then scoring the planks slightly deep- er. Masking tape was then applied to the wrapper’s exterior and the piece bent around the core. Rubber bands and tape secured the wrapper until the glue dried.
Delicate self-adhesive
bands were added with the aid of a supplied jig to complete the tanks. Three of the five laser-cut tank spac- ers were drilled to accept side reinforc- ing rods before all five were installed between the tanks mounted on the car deck. These assemblies also support the roof, ends and letter board in addi- tion to the side reinforcing rods. Once the spacers were completely set, hard copper wire with turnbuckles attached were mounted into pre-drilled holes. The end sheathing, roof assembly with hatches and letter board were then glued and clamped in place before adding
the ladders, end platform, brake staff and wheel to complete the
model. Since decals are not included, fi- nal lettering and decoration is left en- tirely to the whims of the builder. Bachmann On30 arch bar trucks as specified in the instructions and Kadee No. 5 couplers were installed on the finished car. The deck height with the Bachman trucks in place is nearly per- fect for those On30 modelers who wish to have their coupler height match On3 standards. For those whose equipment is set for the HO height, the couplers will need to be shimmed down and/or an under hung coupler used. Once the trucks and couplers are dialed in, the car will easily operate on 18-inch radius curves. RS Laser’s pickle car really stands
out in any train consist. While more complicated to construct than most, the model is well designed, fun to build and uses quality materials in its construc- tion. Even if your railroad doesn’t serve a pickle plant, this car can easily stand in for hauling various liquids over the rails or for service with a fire train. All that remains is the addition of some let- tering before the car enters revenue service. The price of No. 1404, Pickle Car is $49.99.—GEORGE RILEY
