the Central had a winner, and orders were placed for 59 additional Hudsons in class J1b; 49 for the NYC and ten for the Michigan Central. Twenty-five of these had Coffin feedwater heaters in- stead of Elesco, but were otherwise similar to the 5200. In 1928 and early 1929, 25 J1c’s were built for the NYC with Coffin feedwater heaters, and five more for the MC with Coffins. They also had cast steel frames with integral cylinders,
and Baker instead of
Walschaerts valve gear. Additionally, 75 J1d class locomotives were built in late 1929 and 1930. These incorporated all of the improvements on the last five J1c’s. Those assigned to the Michigan Central reverted back to Ele- sco feedwater heaters and roller bear- ings were installed on the lead and trail trucks. The standard Duplex stokers were replaced with the BK type. Of the 75 J1d locomotives, 40 of these were for the NYC, 20 for the Big Four, and 15 for the MC. The CCC&St.L did not have track pans, so none of the Big Four ten- ders had water scoops. The final batch of J1’s consisted of 40
class J1e locomotives built in 1931. The 30 for the NYC were like the J1d’s, but with Coffin feedwater heaters, and ten for the big Four had Worthington feed- water heaters. The last two NYC J1e’s, the 5343 and the most famous Hudson of all, the 5344 that was destined to be- come the streamlined Commodore Van- derbilt, and the inspiration for Lionel’s O scale 700E, received roller bearings on the drivers and tenders but retained friction bearings on their trailing trucks.
The J1’s continued to be upgraded over their lifetimes. The 75 earliest lo- comotives received cast steel frames with integral cylinders, Baker valve gear, and roller bearings on the engine trucks. Marker lights were removed and Valve Pilots (to help optimize valve settings) were added. Many received new large centipede tenders, and most had the booster engines removed. The CCC&St.L 6600 series and the MC 8200 series locomotives received new numbers from 5345 to 5404 in the
1930’s after the NYC formally leased these lines.
The new BLI Paragon2 models are ex- quisite replicas of these peerless proto- types. The sample reviewed was catalog No. 2585, a model of Michigan Central J1d 8221 in her as-delivered configura- tion. All of the details listed above ap- propriate to this prototype are present on the model and match available photo- graphs. Piping is very complete so that it is possible to trace all significant pipes from source to destination, including those normally out of sight under the running boards. The paint is smoothly applied and the white lettering and striping is opaque and razor sharp. The model includes a synchronized and con- trollable smoke unit.
The cab interior detail is excellent and correct for a J1d and J1e. The standard BK stoker delivery box rises through the center of the cab floor be- low the firebox door. The metal baffle to shield the glare of an open firebox door from the engineer’s eyes is accurately modeled, as is the gauge panel. There does appear to be a Valve Pilot indica- tor box on the back head that most likely was not added while the loco wore “Lines” lettering. The model has a five-pole, skew-wound motor that powers the center drivers. There are traction tires on the rear drivers. Only the front driver axle is sprung. All wheelsets, after being checked
with an NMRA gauge, were in gauge with properly sized flanges. The drivers and trailing truck wheels have slightly narrow wheel treads. The drive is smooth and quiet.
Confirming the
Broadway Limited recommendation, our sample with standard tender operated 18″ radius curves. A minimum of 22″ curves is recommended for versions with the PT-4 centipede tenders. In the conventional d.c. mode with the smoke unit turned off, our sample’s sound system came on at 7.1 volts and 0.05 amps, and the locomotive started to move at 8.0 volts and 0.1 amps. It ran smoothly at about 1.5 s.m.p.h. At 12 volts, the speed was 71 s.m.p.h. and current draw 0.3 amps; at 16 volts
