Importantly, the book also shatters some of the myths about TT&TO on model railroads, misconceptions like “TT&TO only works on huge layouts with lots of single-track mainline”. While that style of layout is ideally suit- ed to TT&TO, even a spare-room short- line can take advantage of TT&TO oper- ation (and TT&TO would be more prototypical than building a CTC panel for such a modest layout). Having read the book through twice now, I’m using it to work out how to add TT&TO to my own layout, even though my prototype is a very sleepy branch line. There’s a lot more between the covers,

too, and it is all illustrated with photos of prototypes, photos of layouts, and photos of hobbyists having fun with the TT&TO system. And while the forward notes that using TT&TO on a layout is a way to preserve a railway ritual that’s vanishing into history, I think that the book’s biggest contribution is that it makes TT&TO more than just accessi- ble: it makes TT&TO look fun. From the layout operator with a red “Rule 99” hat and red flag who’s grinning as he stands in the aisle ready to stop any following train, to the two operators hav- ing a laugh about their cornfield meet, there’s a sense in reading the book that this is a wonderfully social way to run a layout–more human-centric than star- ing at a red signal waiting for it to turn green, and more likely to generate great post-session stories to share with other modelers. For that, and many other rea- sons, I highly recommend this book to anybody with an interest in operation, regardless of operating style, experience or level of interest. If you have shied away from TT&TO because it seemed far too difficult to learn and so serious it would sap all the fun out of the hobby, this book could change your mind and save you the time and expense of wiring a full signal system and CTC board. I should also point out that OPSIG members enjoy a $5.00 price break on the book–yet one more good reason to con- sider a membership. Try it for a year, and chances are you’ll be renewing before your term is up.–TREVOR MARSHALL
