AN UNLIKELY ALLIANCE?

The BPA and NoTo Mob really should have a lot to talk about, says Sarah Juggins

he intentions of the NoTo Mob are very good. They want to enlighten and protect the public from injustices inflicted upon them by local and central government. The group brings to that mission a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm, and has been rewarded for its efforts by two moments in the sun: the first was a starring role in the BBC documentary, Has Parking Gone Mad?; and the second when three of its members spoke on behalf of the group at Parkex 2013.

I watched the documentary and listened to the Parkex talk, and I sympathised with the three speakers because they were on a hiding to nothing. They came to Parkex expecting a hostile and aggressive reaction; instead they got a polite round of applause. When the BPA’s chief executive Patrick Troy asked a question of the speakers, he was courteous, receptive to the points raised and completely ignored a jibe that greeted him as he introduced himself.

When the group spoke of starting an associated trade body comprising companies who had been expelled from the BPA, they

totally missed the point – there is a reason the companies have been expelled, and if the NoTo Mob are seeking to protect the public, giving legitimacy to rogue operators is not the best way to go about it. And then there is their modus operandi. If I was driving through one of the London boroughs and I suddenly encountered a group of men wearing face masks and waving placards, there is every chance that I would put my foot down and speed away as fast as I could.

NEW CONTRACTS: But, as I said, the

intentions of the group are very good. The members are hard-working and they believe in what they are doing. However, they are

hindered in their mission because they cannot convince everyone that they are well-meaning, and while they have many professionals within their organisation, from the outside they face stereotyping that associates them with anti-social behaviour and anarchy. Hopefully, the appearance of the NoTo Mob

at Parkex will open a dialogue with the BPA, because I suspect the two organisations have quite a lot in common.
