PARKING ON AUTOPILOT

Parking problems caused by tight garage space may be a thing of the past thanks to a new invention from car manufacturers Audi. Visitors to a parking garage in Ingolstadt, Germany, may feel that they have been transported to the future, thanks to the groundbreaking driving technology recently implemented by the car maker. Though still in trial stage, the capabilities of the garage are impressive. Users simply pull up outside and leave their car to fi nd a space and park itself. Later, a touch of a button on the right smartphone app will summon the vehicle back to the entrance.

Numerous laser systems map the environment in 3-D, allowing cars specially equipped with radar and wireless receivers to fi nd their way through the garage while avoiding other cars, sense an empty spot, pull in and shut off the engine automatically. While this technology isn’t yet ready to be implemented, the project demonstrates the possibility for fully autonomous driving to one day be a part of everyday life. This is just one of the recent breakthroughs in vehicle autonomy, and it promises to make driving and parking both safer and easier.
