PARKEX HAS GROWN UP!
Fewer gimmicks and gizmos made Parkex an altogether more purposeful affair, says Jane Hack, BPA chief operating offi cer
W
ell that was my initial impression as I wandered around the exhibition on the
opening morning. There was a sense of purpose about the place – don’t get me wrong, that has always been there – but in the past it has been wrapped up in a fl uffy packaging of fl ashing lights and sales gimmicks. Of course a lot of this is to do with the economic climate we are in. Local authorities can no longer afford to pay for several members of staff to spend three days at an exhibition or conference. Private operators do not have the resources to send
all their staff to these events. Now it is a case of the would-be buyers identifying what they need to run their department or business and negotiating terms; while the salespeople are hoping to attract defi nite sales, not time- wasters who are simply intent on collecting goody-bags.
And the exhibitors have to get a serious message across. They cannot afford to be anything but frugal with their stands. On the one hand it does nobody any favours if the stand is opulent and over-the-top. That says:

‘we are extravagant, and to fund that we will be charging you a lot of money’. On the other hand, most companies are fi nding the economy as tough as the local authorities are, so wasting money on gimmicks and gadgets is simply not an option.

The seminars were well-attended and provoked stimulating debate and I witnessed several business meetings taking place over lunch or a coffee. It was a very grown-up affair.
I enjoyed Parkex this year for all of these reasons. It is no fun scrimping and saving as we are being forced to do, but it is refreshing
seeing the professional attitude of the people within our sector of the economy as they face the challenges of diffi cult times. They arrived at the NEC with a purpose and a business- like approach that did Parkex and the parking profession proud. ■ Did you notice the special BPA lapel pin on our front cover?
