This photo shows an ingot stripper that had been used at the U.S. Steel Homestead Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The mill was shut down in 1986, but before most of the build- ings were demolished they were documented by HAER. Information on the mill can be found here:

ingot stripper that Gordon Geiger in- cluded when he sent us his article on modeling a rolling mill. The photo (re- produced above) in the link came from the Library of Congress’ HAER (His- toric American Engineering Record) collection. The photographs, measured drawings, and other information for more than 35,000 structures and sites, from 1933 to the present, are contained in the library’s HAER and HABS (His- toric American Buildings Survey) col- lections. The program began during the Great Depression when the Na- tional Park Service put a thousand un- employed architects to work for ten weeks documenting “America’s antique buildings.” You can get an idea of their holdings by checking out their website:

C&ME roster correction We received new information on the roster of the Chicago & Milwaukee Elec- tric Railway (March RMC). Its first cars were single truckers Nos. 1-3, from Brill and originally ordered by but not deliv- ered to the Greensburg, Jeanette & Pitts- burgh Railway. These cars opened the line. There is no evidence that the two secondhand cars mentioned in the article and rosters ever existed. –BILL S.
