In the second chapter, which covers the 1960 to 1980 time period, the last of the regular steam operations in the state are shown along with a few early fan excursions, but diesels now domi- nate the rails. Declining passenger train service, abandonments and merg- ers are all chronicled here. With color photography becoming more popular during this time, the chapter has a good mix of color images in with the black and white.
The coverage of the last two decades of the twentieth century show a contin- ual change as new locomotives appear, cabooses disappear, mergers continue to consolidate the mainline railroads and new shortlines are started. Relying on many of his own photographs to il- lustrate this chapter, the author’s tal- ent as a first-class photographer are plainly in evidence.
The 36 pages of the final chapter cover the first 12 years of the new century. Featured are photos of a variety of steam-powered excursion trains, short- line action, Amtrak service, new com- muter rail operations in Minneapolis, current industrial operations and main- line action.
