smoothly on radii down to 15 inches and could probably be made to work on even sharper curves. The vee engine block with its connecting rods and crankshaft is in itself a singular work of art. When operating over a full range of voltages using either analog d.c. or DCC the mechanism is whisper quiet.

The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included

The Heisler is delivered pre-equipped with a 28-step DCC decoder and pre- wired speaker. Despite the somewhat limited number of speed steps, due to the low gearing of the drive train opera- tion is smooth over the entire operating range in both d.c. analog and DCC. When operating with d.c. analog power the head and back up lights illuminate at approximately 6 volts with the loco- motive beginning to move when the power reaches just below 8 volts. With DCC the locomotive will start off in speed step one and creep along at less than 3 scale miles per hour. Top speed using either control system was well less than 40 scale miles per hour. With the low gear ratio and high quality mo- tor, the model will coast a short distance when power is removed. Under full load the mechanism draws less than a quar- ter of an ampere.

module which fits into the fuel bunker underneath the coal load or oil bunker. The sound module connects to the de- coder using a hard-wired 21-pin inter- face. The sounds provided have clearly been recorded from a prototype operat- ing Heisler and match the mechanical movement of the model. Included with the sound suite are three optional whistle sounds controlled by CV 115. The default whistle (set by value 0) is a recorded B&O three chime whistle which is deep and resonate. Sadly, this may not be the most prototypical whis- tle for this locomotive. The second, a peanut whistle (set by value 1), pro- vides a high pitched “peep” making it the best choice for use. The third ver- sion is a D&RGW single chime whistle (set by value 2), which is a good second choice for those requiring prototype au- dio fidelity. A full range of additional dedicated CV’s are also available to modify both the mechanical perform- ance in addition to customizing the sound to the modeler’s tastes. The Heisler has a factory installed balloon stack and constant brightness LED-illuminated oil head and back-up light. The decoder CV’s which control these lights have been set to be con- stantly on. Those wishing to have the lights operate directionally can do so by changing CV’s 33 and 34 from a value of 3 to a value of 1 and 2, respectively. For those wishing to change the ap- pearance of their factory-delivered lo- comotive, a full complement of addi- tional details is included to allow the modeler to customize their model. In-

cluded are two additional smokestacks, additional head and backup lights, a drop in oil bunker and loose coal. If the replacement “electric” lights are used, the modeler may wish to add an after- market generator to their model since, quite correctly, Bachmann did not in- clude this appliance on the as-deliv- ered Heisler. The only detail that has been included in past On30 offerings but not included here is a wood load. This fuel load would be a perfect add- on for those who choose to use the round cabbage stack. While not provid- ed, this detail can be easily installed on top of the coal load by the modeler us- ing bits and pieces normally on hand around the work bench. To round out an excellent model, the Heisler is available in six different fac- tory decorated versions. The paint, striping and lettering (where applied) is smooth, opaque and neatly rendered. Three of these versions are lettered for Bachmann’s popular fictitious railroad companies, with the other three paint- ed overall black or black with various degrees of striping applied. These al- low the modeler to easily letter their models for their home roads. For tech- niques to do this see RMC Extra Board, http://rrmodelcraftsman.com/ extraboard/. Once again Bachmann has delivered a smooth running, well detailed, full featured model of a popular type of geared steam locomotive for use on On30 model railroads. The auxillary, high-quality sound module allows those wishing a sound-equipped model to easily install this feature. Whether used straight from the box or with added detail and decoration, Bach- mann’s On30 Heisler is an outstanding addition to any model railroader’s ros- ter. The Stearns Heisler in six decorat- ed versions sells for $419.00. The plug- and-play sound module is $125.00. PS-2 three-bay covered hopper: N scale Mfd. by Micro-Trains Line Co., P.O. Box 1200, Talent, OR 97540. Micro-Trains has once again intro- duced a new model to its vast line of N scale rolling stock. This new model is the PS-2 three-bay covered hopper with high sides. This type of car was built by Pullman Standard in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Grain, the primary product shipped in this car, was former- ly shipped by boxcar, but in an effort to move the product more efficiently, this covered hopper was developed. The three unloading bays and large trough- style loading hatches made loading and unloading a quicker process. These cars caught on quickly and are still in serv-
