F

ew people in their right mind would ever consider taking their £90k pride and joy away from the safety of the Tarmac, but it’s incredible just how

well the new Range Rover adapts when push comes to shove. And when Land Rover claimed that its fourth

generation model is the best off -roading Range Rover to date, the temptation was simply too much and such a bold statement had to be explored. T ey weren’t kidding! Armed with a 3.0-litre TDV6 in top-of-the-

range Autobiography trim and priced at £87,895, we set off on a woodland adventure with rocks, water troughs, muddy inclines and narrow tracks through the dense forest in our path.

And to make the task that little bit more

“interesting” there had been several days of heavy rainfall leading up to the challenge, so the entire route was extremely boggy. All Range Rovers in the past have had a great

reputation for dealing comprehensively with testing conditions and diff erent terrains, but the new model is certainly more refi ned. And one new upgraded feature that takes the

strain out of off -road decision-making is the Terrain Response 2 Auto system which uses sophisticated intelligent technology to detect the current driving conditions and select the most appropriate terrain program to deal with it. Another key factor is the vehicle’s state-of- the-art new lightweight suspension system

which also makes tackling uneven terrain all the more simple and achievable. Land Rover has ensured the vehicle is as tough and versatile as possible. For instance, the wading depth has been increased to 900mm and there is 17mm more ground clearance. These may sound like facts and figures for number crunchers, but it’s these factors that are make or break when driving across boulders and through deep water pools. So back to our course. With the hill descent activated and all terrains response systems kicking in, it’s incredible how little the driver actually has to do. And that’s because the Range Rover is so accomplished.
