Waterfront talks to top sports lawyer Mel Goldberg, the mover and shaker behind some of the biggest deals in football
W
ith an enviable international reputation, Mel Goldberg is widely acknowledged to be the foremost sports lawyer in the UK. He is the
President of the British Association for Sport and Law and has provided representation in some of the most high profi le cases in this fi eld, notably the Bruce Grobbelaar and Hans Segers match fi xing trial. In his guise of agent, Mel represents some of the top footballers in the world, and has infl uence at the highest level of the game. Mel is something of a sports law pioneer in this
country. Infl uenced by his experiences in America, he was instrumental in introducing sports law to the UK. T is has coincided with the growth of sport, particularly the Premier League, as a multi billion pound industry.

He said: “I was one of the group which founded the British Association for Sport and Law, which is 21 years old this year, the same age as the Premier League by coincidence. I founded that 21 years ago in January together with people like Maurice Watkins, who was a legal director at Man Utd, and some other eminent people in sport and law. We’re now the leading sports law organisation in the country, we’ve got over 500 members and
