After collecting his own must-have accessory from Prince Charles – his very own MBE – Hayley Leaver caught up with Stephen Webster to talk about his contribution to the British jewellery industry
F
rom a modest upbringing near London, Stephen Webster has become one of the world’s most celebrated jewellery designers, heralded by Royal
and rock n’ roll families alike. When he’s not accepting honours at Buckingham Palace, he’s creating one-off pieces for his countless celebrity fans, not least of all Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s wedding bands. While Madge’s marriage may not have stood the test of time, Webster’s unconventional yet beautiful designs certainly have, and he is widely regarded to be one of the most accomplished international designers around – despite having

come across his medium almost by accident. “I was going to study fashion design at the Medway College in Kent and by chance walked into a jewellery design class rather than the fashion design room,” he says. “T e fl ames, noise, chemicals and shiny objects were instantly appealing and much more up my alley then fashion design. I guess it was a good choice as 37 years later I am still at it!” Webster followed his studies by working
under Tony Sheperd, a former Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, and at several established London design houses - honing his love for traditional craftsmanship
