Craig Flannigan, PFA Scotland’s Education co-ordinator looks ahead to this year’s Careers Day and reflects upon the importance of career planning. “There is no doubt that football can have a profound effect on the life and development of players. For the most part, it is accepted, if not assumed, that a football career will have a positive impact on players. Although football can be a very rewarding career for the vast majority of those participating in it, it can have detrimental effects on personal development. Career transitions, in particular, can be a source of problems for many players. Once their playing days are over, they must find a new career, which can be very difficult at times. The result can be troublesome and at times overwhelming, particularly when the causes of the termination are outside of the player’s control, resulting in them being psychologically harmful. However, if you anticipate and prepare for the transition, you may have a greater sense of control. It’s crucial that players recognise the inevitable transition that will occur at some stage of their life. This is why it’s vital to have continued involvement in other activities which promote all round development. These activities do not have to conflict with football, they can compliment football and personal development. Events such as PFA Scotland’s Careers Day will enable you to have access to information about career planning and personal development, thus assisiting you to develop the tools that will enable you to focus on life after football. The format of the event has been tailored specifically to suit the requirements of both apprentice and senior players.”

CAREERS DAY: 2013

PFA Scotland’s Annual Careers Day will take place on Wednesday 24th April 2013 at Hampden Park Stadium. Following the success of last year’s event, the day will follow a similar format and be structured in the following way:

Apprentice Group 1

Information session and Q and A opportunity for apprentice players who still have contracts secured with their club. This group will receive advice and guidance on areas such as Player Welfare, Social Media, Being a Professional and Post Career Planning. There will be a selected panel on the day consisting of current and former players, managers and other relevant guests.

Apprentice Group 2 Information sessions for apprentice players who are coming to the end of their contracts which are unlikely to be renewed. This group will be offered information from the likes of Stirling University Football Scholarship Programme, Police Force, USA Scholarships, Personal Training Providers and other further education and training providers.

Senior Players

Individual workshops which are timetabled to offer the opportunity for professional players to attend all or selected information sessions. These workshops should be of interest to players looking to prepare for their post football career or those looking for a change of career direction. The full details and times for these workshops are detailed on the two pages overleaf.

Scott Severin on career planning

“I just wish I had made much better use of my free time during my playing days. I remember spending loads of time on team

buses whilst travelling to and from matches where some of my teammates would be studying for their futures. I always

kept saying to myself that I would get round to doing that sort of thing. Having to retire prematurely due to injury has given me a lot of time to reflect on these type of things. Hopefully, players will read this and take notice that they need to maximise the free time they have to plan for life after football.”
