How good is your control? How often as very young aspiring footballers were you asked this, or indeed posed the question to a fellow football fanatic?

The question quite obviously relates to your ability to bring the ball comfortably into your possession, but is there other areas of a footballer’s life where they can assume much greater control than they realise? For example, successful footballers will be interviewed many times and yet there are probably very few who ever realise that they can be in a position of power when it comes to the media, whether it is written or broadcast. By increasing their awareness of this a player can not only have more influence of the content of the interview but give valuable assistance to those asking the questions, as a comfortable and relaxed interviewee is much more likely to provide greater interaction and content. The above is only one of several areas which was discussed and developed during PFA Scotland’s recent Media Course. The bespoke course which was held over two full days, was hosted by Enterprise

A CONTROLLED

PFA Scotland host Media Course for players

Screen and also focused on improving players presentation skills, increasing their awareness of body language and delivery of information, along with making them aware that they already have a skill set which they can improve upon to make them excellent communicators.

All the players who participated in the course had a variety of reasons for doing so, ranging from enhancing their ability to talk to a group and therefore assist their coaching capabilities to making them more likely to make the most of media opportunities that may be offered to them and simply increasing general confidence when public speaking.

The commitment and application shown by those in attendance played a major role in the success of the course and PFA Scotland was delighted by their approach and by the feedback received from them. Two players who enjoyed the course were happy to share their thoughts on what they learned from the two days.
