FIFPRO ONLINE DEGREE Flexible learning for players

There is no doubt that being a footballer requires much more dedication and sacrifice than most outside the game would believe is the case. It is therefore not easy for any player to commit to future career planning while focusing on their playing ambitions.

However while it is difficult, it is not impossible and PFA Scotland is very much an advocate of further education and planning through advice, guidance, organisation of bespoke courses and its Annual Carers Day. It is therefore pleasing that FIFPro, the World Players Union is continuing to adopt a similar approach to education for footballers in the shape of its Online Degree Course.

The course which is hosted by the University of Northern Denmark, is a degree in Sports Management and is undertaken completely by online learning therefore providing a fantastic degree of flexibility for participants. Ultimately this has great appeal for players as they can plan their learning around their ever changing playing and training commitments.

The course which is facilitated by the FIFPro Online Academy is beginning preparations for its third year and has already had a number of professional players embark on the path towards graduation.

A further incentive for players is that the cost of the degree is met by FIFPro with the only financial implications for players being the payment for books, most of which could be subsidised using PFA Scotland Educational Grants. The FIFPro degree does require commitment

and hard work for participants but equally it provides a fantastic opportunity for players to undertake a degree course which is relative to sport.

Commenting on the course PFA Scotland Education Co-ordinator Craig Flannigan said “I recently attended a gathering at FIFPro’s headquarters in the Netherlands where representatives from eighteen other unions were present. Personally, I was really enthused by not only the structure of the course, but also the flexibility it offers. I believe that any player keen to pursue such further education should give serious consideration to enrolling for this degree.” Any player wishing further information on the FIFPro Online Academy should contact Jack Ross or Craig Flannigan at PFA Scotland or attend this year’s Careers Day on Wednesday 24th April where a presentation on the degree will be given.

“I BELIEVE THAT ANY PLAYER KEEN TO PURSUE SUCH FURTHER EDUCATION SHOULD GIVE SERIOUS CONSIDERATION TO ENROLLING FOR THIS DEGREE.”
