“Our first priority is making America

a magnet for new jobs and manufacturing.” — President Barack Obama

C

ould it be a more exciting time in manufacturing? The old conventional wisdom that manufactur- ing is dead has officially been turned on its head. For the second year in

a row, manufacturing played a key role in the State of the Union, as an answer to the nation's economic challenges.

"Our first priority is making America a mag- net for new jobs and manufacturing," President Barack Obama said during his Feb. 12 speech. "After shed- ding jobs for more than 10 years, our manufactur- ers have added about 500,000 jobs over the past three. Cat- erpillar is bring- ing jobs back from Japan. Ford is bringing jobs back from Mexico. After locating plants

in other countries like China, Intel is opening its most advanced plant right here at home. And this year, Apple will start making Macs in America again.

is now a state-of-the art lab where new workers are mastering the 3D printing that has the po- tential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything. There's no reason this can't hap- pen in other towns. So tonight, I'm announcing the launch of three more of these manufactur- ing hubs, where businesses will partner with the Departments of Defense and Energy to turn regions left behind by globalization into global centers of high-tech jobs. And I ask this Congress to help create a network of fifteen of these hubs and guarantee that the next revolu- tion in manufacturing is Made in America. "If we want to make the best products, we also have to invest in the best ideas."

President Barack Obama mentioned manufacturing several times during his 2013 State of the Union address, positioning advanced manufacturing as a solution to the nation's economic challenges.

This ongoing resurgence in manufactur- ing is not in the style of the dirty, danger- ous manufac- turing of days gone by. No, this

resurgence is in clean, smart “advanced manu- facturing”—the kind of high-tech manufactur- ing in which any parent should be proud to have their child employed.

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) defined advanced manufacturing this way in its 2012 “Emerging Global Trends in Advanced Manufacturing” report.
