AIPPI
MOVING
FORWARD: DEVELOPING NEW INITIATIVES
AIPPI has a full agenda of issues relating to worldwide regimes for protection of IP rights on its to-do list for the forthcoming months. Sarah Matheson reports.
Te International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, generally known by its French acronym (AIPPI), is dedicated to the development and improvement of regimes for the protection and enforcement of IP. AIPPI dates back to 1897 and today has almost 9,000 members, representing more than 100 countries.
AIPPI conducts studies of existing national law and proposes measures to achieve harmonisation. In its long history, AIPPI has adopted more than 700 resolutions and reports which it presents to international and national governmental and non-governmental organisations.
At the start of 2012, AIPPI hired an external consultant
to identify ways in which the
association could capitalise on its history, and also to chart a course for the future. Te report was published and considered at AIPPI’s annual meeting in Seoul, Korea, in October 2012.
Te report contains many recommendations covering all aspects of AIPPI’s structure and work. AIPPI has implemented some recommendations, and is gathering further feedback from its membership in relation to others.
AIPPI’s mission statement now reads:
“Te mission of AIPPI is to provide through its worldwide membership the capability and leadership for the analysis and formulation of fair, predictable and well-reasoned intellectual property law policies and practices which balance and harmonize the interests of all stakeholders and allow society to benefit
from innovation, creativity, brand identity and fair competition.”
