Overlooked Causes of Pain The following list of frequently overlooked causes of pain was first published in the AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.


Cardiopulmonary Oncologic Dermatologic Dental Gastrointestinal


Congestive heart failure, (pulmonary edema and pleural effusion); pleuritis, cerebral vascular accident, blood clot


Any and all cancer


Otitis, severe pruritis, burns, chronic wounds, abscess, cellulitis, clipper burns, urine scalding, severe chin acne


Oral tumors, feline oral resorptive lesions, fractures (no matter how small), tooth abscess, ulcers, stomatitis


Constipation, obstipation, obstruction, megacolon; anal sac impaction, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, gastric dilation-golvulus (GDV), foreign body


Musculoskeletal


Most often overlooked in cats. Muscular soreness, arthritis, degenerative joint disease, tendon or ligament injury, inter- vertebral disc disease, fact pain of spondylosis, osteodystophy, dislocations


Ocular Urogenital Corneal disease and ulcers, claucome, uveitis


Uroliths, ureterolights, queening/whelping, feline interstitial cystitis, acute renal failure, enlarged kidneys, lower urinary tract infections, urinary obstruction, vaginitis (especially in obese cats)


Hospital Procedures Restraint (examination, obtaining blood and urine samples, radiographs, and ultrasound; even gentle handling and hard surfaces can increase pain in an already painful animal). Urinary/ IV catheterization, bandaging, surgery, thoracocenteses, chest tube placement and drainage procedures, abdominocentesis. Manual extraction of stool and anal sac expression (especially in cats)


Surgical procedures Ovariohysterectomy, castration, onychectomy (regardless of method used, onychectomy causes a higher level of pain than spays and neuters) growth removal, and all other surgical procedures


Neurologic
