or someone who never really intended on becoming a vet- erinarian, Kate Knutson, DVM, is thrilled with her choice of profession.


“I am probably one of the few people


you’ll ever interview in veterinary medi- cine that didn’t dream of being a veteri- narian from the time they were 5 years old,” Knutson said. “I thought I would go into research with a PhD and maybe an MD to go along with my DVM degree. Instead, life happened as I was busy making plans.” Knutson’s permanent detour into vet-


erinary medicine began in her first year of studying large animal medicine at the University of Minnesota when she acci- dentally became an AAHA addict by join- ing as a student member. “It didn’t make any sense that a large


animal vet-to-be who was going into research was a student AAHA member, but I was, and I’ve been one ever since,” she said. Following graduation, Knutson plunged


headlong into her veterinary career by purchasing what has now become Pet Crossing Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic in Bloomington, Minn., only about 8 months after finishing school. It was “way faster than one should buy a veterinary clinic,” she said. Fortunately, the purchase has worked out nicely for her, and she has quickly earned a reputation as a tireless advocate of dentistry and wellness.
