Conveyor manufacturer Sovex is has opened an office in Shanghai China and this was instrumental in it securing its first order of two of Sovex’s telescopic vehicle loaders worth £64,000 order to TNT Hoau’s destribution centre in Xiamen, China. The equipment is expected to halve the time it takes to load parcels into vehicles for distribution across China.

A new kind of degree has been created to address the shortage of graduates in the supply chain and logistics Industry. This industry- led initiative will also arm gradu- ates with the tools they need for a successful career in the industry, starting with a guaranteed job from one of the course sponsors. The Novus Trust is introducing
a four-year Logistics and Supply Chain BSc degree course. Sponsored by companies in the industry, Novus aims to be the UK’s leading graduate alumni for supply chain professionals. A group of 15 retailers, manufactur-
ers and logistics organisations have signed up as sponsors with many others expressing interest. The Novus degree course covers supply chain manage- ment, finance, statistics, organi- sational structure and methods, sociology, psychology, transport network design, warehouse design, inventory management, supply chain IT and HR manage- ment. In addition, the core
degree course will be supple- mented with essential manager- ial ‘craft skills’ such as leadership, people management and communication. The Novus Trust is inviting companies to join as sponsors. Supplier of automated materials handling solutions for warehous- ing, production and distribution operations TGW will construct a 12,000ft2 office development on Peaker Park in Market Harborough in Leicestershire. The modern two-storey devel- opment has been designed to accommodate more than 90 people. Currently around 40 engineers, project managers, sales, marketing and clerical staff are based at the existing sites with a further 40 field-based engineers frequenting the offices. Gearing up for Multimodal 2013
Multimodal 2013, the supply chain event takes place at the NEC Birmingham, on 23 - 25 April. “Multimodal is a one-stop-shop for shippers who need to find ways of optimising their supply chain and transportation flows,” said show director Robert Jervis. Speakers include the FTA's Chris Welsh, David Gaughan from Kerry Logistics, Andy Benson from Barclays, and Mark Corby from Invensys, as well as presenters from Norbert Dentressangle and DB Schenker. Multimodal 2013 will welcome logistics and supply chain names, including BoxTop Technologies,
Freightliner, UFS Freight Services, Stena Line and Montracon. Seminar sessions, in conjunc- tion with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Freight Transport Association, will cover topics, including freight rates, contracts, carbon reduction schemes, customs compliance, and financing supply chains. “Panels of experts will be on hand to tackle supply chain issues ranging from keeping up-to-date with regulations, to finding ways to work efficiently and compli- antly,” said conference producer Emma Murray.

This month, one of the premier events in the materials handling and logistics calendar is taking place in the form of the IMHX 2013 show at the NEC in Birmingham on 19 to 22 March. Held every three years, this year’s show is spread across four halls and is being supported by over 400 exhibitors. This is over 100 more than when the show was last held in 2010. Facility expansion
Logistics and haulage company, DBL Logistics, is working on a £2million facility in Sheffield. The company, which has seen its turnover increase to more than £3 million a year, expects the development to take around six months and enable DBL to expand its warehouse capacity from 1,500 pallets space to around 6,000. Phase two will see a further 16,500ft2 added by May 2014 to increase DBL Logistics pallets space further to around 9,000.
