Richard Steinheimer (inducted in 2001) in the hall of fame. Before it was time to get back to the
shows, a surprise inductee was added to the Winterail Hall of Fame. Vic Neves, who be- came a producer of Winterail in 1990, was inducted by Dick Dorn. It’s hard to keep a se- cret from the show’s producer, but the rest of the Winterail roadies (and Vic’s wife and co- producer Annie) pulled it off. Getting back to the shows, the first one of
the evening was by new hall of famer Shirley Burman who did a live narrated show (the only one of the day) on Sierra Journeys, cov- ering trips she took with Richard Stein- heimer to the snow sheds of Donner Pass. Gordon Glattenberg then covered a wide va- riety of operations with his Passenger Train Fan Trips, starting with his first excursion behind a Southern Pacific 4-8-4 in 1956. Robert Scott then did Requiem For a Sim- ple Land – North Dakota, showing how the state looked before the big Bakken Oil strike changed the landscape, the railroads and the people. Winterail finished up with Vic Neves showing Forty Years and Counting, a retrospective of his four decades of railfan- ning. While Vic has traveled far afield, this show stayed pretty much in his home state of California. It’s hard to believe another Winterail has come and gone — this was my 16th year of heading to Stockton, and it never gets old. It’s a great time to catch up with old friends, make new ones and get inspired to get track- side. Thanks to Vic and Annie Neves, Evan Werkema,
railroadiana show promoter
Cheryl Meeker and the rest of the Winterail roadies for a great time. —S.B.
California Again? As I mentioned above, this was my 16th Winterail. On each trip I take a few days on either side of the event and explore the Golden State, which is kind of like a railfan- ning heaven. As this
year
approached,
though, I began to wonder — have I seen everything there is to see within a semi-rea- sonable distance of Stockton? After 16 years, you have to wonder... Well, this year I was equipped with my Alien Bees strobes for the first time, so night shots on Altamont Pass of the Altamont Ex- press Commuter trains were certainly an option. The best shot, though, turned out to be at dusk where the Bees provided a nice touch of fill flash (page 55). On Friday be- fore the pizza party we (brother Bruce and I) chased the California Northern from Tracy, something I hadn’t done before. Okay, we were finding new things... I had been up on Donner Pass many
times, but had neglected the foothills be- tween Roseville and Colfax on previous trips. I had figured we’d concentrate on that area, but when friend Steven Welch told me the California Zephyr would be coming down Donner with Amtrak heritage unit No. 145 on the point, the plan changed and we were at Soda Springs, just short of the Don- ner summit, for the chase down on Monday. Toss in some great shooting in the foothills at Auburn and Newcastle, a visit to Rodeo along San Pablo Bay, a couple of new photo angles at Benicia, and more, and you know what? There’s still plenty to do. Can’t wait until next year!
