ABOVE: Before the rebuilt GP38-3s arrived in 2010, TRRA relied on a fleet of EMD SW1200 and SW1500 switchers to power most trains. This view from February 2007 shows both models at work in Madison Yard in Venice, Ill. BELOW: On a cold day in January 2007, TRRA SW1200 No. 1230 and a caboose are making a set-out to Respondek Railroad at WR Tower in Granite City, Ill.

with the BNSF Hannibal sub at MP 2.0 in the Baden neighborhood near Hall Street. A couple of large customers are located

along this route and it is

switched on second shift by a No. 200 series job or on third shirt by the “Mill” job. BNSF also exercises trackage rights on this stretch operating oil, coal and grain trains from the Hannibal sub to connections and customers on the TRRA. Illinois Transfer District: A pri- mary main line on the TRRA beginning at “SH Interlocking” near the west end of TRRA’s Madison Yard near State Street in Madison, it begins at MP 0.0 and stretches to MP 7.5 in East St.

Louis, Ill., “Valley Junction” where it connects with TRRA’s Oil Works indus- trial lead and UP’s Chester Subdivi- sion. It’s a very busy main line seeing trains of A&S, NS, CN, UP, CSX, KCS and BNSF. The line has some online business and is worked on second shift by a “Monsanto” job. This line passes through some very rough parts of East St. Louis where caution and common sense are a must.

Eads Conologue District: Line be- gins at MP 0.0 “CP Junction,” the east end of TRRA’s Madison Yard in Brook- lyn, Ill., through Q Tower interlocking in East St. Louis, Ill., to a connection

with UP’s Springfield Sub at “MO Junction” MP 3.4 in East St. Louis, Ill., almost under Interstate 70/64. This line is actually very busy on the stretch between MP 2.5 Q Tower and UP con- nection at MO Junction MP 3.4 with several Amtrak, KCS, UP and BNSF moves a day. Light traffic and minimal access are the problem on the stretch between MP 0.0 and 2.4 with less than five trains a day. This line, too, runs through rough parts of Brooklyn, Venice and East St. Louis, Ill., and cau- tion and common sense should prevail. Wiggins East Side District/Oil Works Industrial Lead: This stretch of track begins from the Wye connec- tion at the east end of Madison Yard in Brooklyn, Ill., at MP 0.0 to MP 5.4 in East St. Louis, Ill., under the Poplar Street Bridge, where it turns into the Eads Conologue District even though in reality it is still the same line. The line leaves Madison Yard, crossing
