Alaska Railroad
WORK STARTS ON NEW BRANCH: Con- struction has begun on the 32-mile Port MacKenzie Extension of the Alaska Railroad. The branch will leave the main at MP 174 in Houston (near Wasilla) and run southwest to the deepwater port, which is nearly 150 miles closer to the interior than Whittier, Seward, and Anchorage. Port MacKenzie is located across from Anchorage on the north shore of the Upper Cook Inlet. Construction may be halted by a lawsuit currently being argued in federal court which challenges the Army Corps of Engi- neers permit for building through wetlands.
