components and assemblies Fibre optic specialist enables short-distance applications to benefit from low cost, rugged, interference-free transmission over polymer fibre
OMC, the pioneer in optoelectronics, can now deliver a full range of polymer fibre optic components and assemblies to ensure cost-effective, secure and interference-free data transmission. Ideally applicable in factories, machinery and other industrial applications over distances ranging from a metre to 50 metres, polymer fibre has not found the wide acceptance it might have done due to limited availability of high quality, versatile connectors and a general lack of expertise in assembling the connectors onto polymer fibre. OMC addresses both these challenges with its own extensive component range, a thorough understanding of polymer fibre and a long-established excellence in producing complete data link assemblies.
The emphasis with polymer fibre has all too often been to lower the cost of a system rather than exploit the technology’s major benefits of versatility, ruggedness and reliability. To address this, OMC’s connector range includes, in addition to well-designed, low-cost plastic moulded devices, a wide range of industry standard connector types such as SMA and ST, produced in rugged all-metal housings capable of providing reliable and consistent performance in industrial and even harsh or hazardous environments. OMC’s optical transmitter and receiver modules are actively alignedto achieve optimal performance for any particular system, and the company can manufacture their entire transmitter and receiver range to customer- specific requirements, attaining launch powers and sensitivities within tightly-specified windows.
Explains William Heath, OMC’s commercial director: “For the best part of 25 years polymer fibre has been under-utilised in many industries, due, for example, to erroneous suggestions that the fibre could be reliably terminated using such means as a simple scalpel cut. This led to many system failures and a deterioration in the reputation of the technology from which, in our experience, it has never recovered in some market segments. As a result polymer fibre systems are often only considered for very low data rates and distances of a few metres. However, if handled correctly polymer fibre is perhaps the most versatile and reliable of all technologies and we have had systems in the field for over 20 years that illustrate this point. There is no reason why a well-designed polymer system cannot achieve high transmission speeds and distances up to 100m while providing a service life of several decades.”
OMC is highly experienced in producing both polymer and glass fibre systems. In addition to the individual components, the company offers complete data links which include a transmitter, receiver and cable assembly that have been performance matched during manufacture to work together. This service allows design engineers to avoid “mixing and matching” off-the-shelf components, which often gives unreliable results. OMC is also able to advise on the correct choice of technology to suit each customer’s application.

New Increased Sensitivity Thumb-Sized MOEMS
The C10988MA-01 is a unique, ultra-compact spectrometer built using MOEMS technology. The C10988MA-01 is a thumb- sized device, measuring only 27.6 x 13 x 16.8 mm, developed for use in portable and hand-held devices, where a standard mini-spectrometer would be too large and consume too much power. Not only small, but the C10988MA-01 is also light, weighing only 9 grams.
To achieve such a small size required the combination of
Hamamatsu’s MEMS and image sensor technologies. The new device uses an aberration-corrected concave grating with a very short focal length, and a blazed grating profile for high diffraction efficiency. The grating is replicated onto the top of a convex glass lens using nano-print technology. Directly opposite the grating is placed a dedicated CMOS silicon image sensor with an on-chip slit. This 75 µm x 750 µm slit is formed into the CMOS chip using MEMS technology. The distance between the sensor and slit is only 1 mm, whilst the grating to image sensor distance a mere 8.5 mm.
Through the use of these novel techniques, the C10988MA-01 can offer a spectral resolution of 14 nm in the wavelength range of 340 nm to 750 nm, making it ideal for a range of visible light applications requiring a miniaturised spectrometer head. To aid initial evaluation Hamamatsu offer a dedicated driver board, the C11351, with USB 2.0 connectivity and 16 bit A/D resolution. This is Hamamatsu working at the forefront of today’s MOEMS technologies, to bring unique and exciting products to an ever demanding market.

Microchip’s new buck PWM controller with high-speed low-FOM MOSFETs offer higher voltage, density and
efficiency for DC/DC power conversion For the first time, you can combine a high- speed, low-FOM MOSFET with Microchip’s new analogue-based PWM controller; or use them with Microchip MOSFET drivers and SMPS-optimised microcontrollers and digital signal controllers, for smaller, more efficient and higher voltage DC/DC power conversion.
DC/DC power-conversion efficiency can be pushed above 96% by driving Microchip’s new high-speed low-FOM MCP87xxx MOSFETs, with the analogue
based MCP19035 PWM controller with integrated synchronous MOSFET drivers. Alternatively, combine MCP87xxx MOSFETs with an MCP14700 synchronous driver and any SMPS-optimised PIC microcontroller or dsPIC33 “GS” digital signal controller, to create flexible, high-performance power-conversion solutions.

Finder’s solid state relay range is expanded
Finder’s 77 Series “single pole” solid state relays are now available in eight new versions, with a 30A current rating to complement the existing 5A models.
With distinct models for zero-voltage and instantaneous switch-on, the former is particularly suited for lighting control where zero- voltage switching can significantly reduce high inrush currents. Instantaneous switch-on provides near instant switching for high speed operation and simultaneous switching in multi-phase circuits, such as three phase motors.
The very high inrush current capability of 520A (10ms) ensures reliability over a long life in a wide range of applications, particularly the switching of lighting where power factor compensation and electronic ballasts have historically been problematic – but it is also ideal for the control of heating, solenoids and motors.
In 22.5mm housing incorporating the heat sink and designed for 35mm rail mounting, the relays are ideal for use in control panels and cabinets in industrial and commercial applications.
Capable of switching single phase motors up to 2.5kW or lamp loads up to 6000W, and with the benefit of silent, high speed switching, they lend themselves to use in a host of environments. Input voltages of 230Vac and 24Vdc.
