Rise in construction output masks trend
n
The latest Construction Trade Survey found that the majority of the
construction industry endured a difficult final quarter of 2012, due to declining output and orders on the demand side, combined with rising costs on the supply side. Large firms, especially those working in the infrastructure sector, have reported improving conditions, but the bulk of the industry still faces a very difficult year ahead especially those further down the supply chain, who are experiencing a contraction in workload, exacerbated by difficulties in late payment.
Commenting on the survey, Noble
Francis, economics director at the Construction Products Association (CPA), said: ‘It was good to see a rise in construction
output for Q4 compared to Q3, when activity was adversely affected due to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, output remains 9.3 per cent lower than a year ago, and this is reflected in the Construction Trade Survey.’ Julia Evans, chief executive of the
National Federation of Builders, added: ‘The construction industry is braced for a year in which weak demand and higher costs will create a very challenging trading environment. ‘As the government and industry
collaborate to lay out a long-term strategy for the industry, we must not lose sight of the need to maintain the current capital investment plans to generate economic growth in the more immediate future.’

receive free access to online training in renewable technologies, it has been announced. The qualification in environmental technologies will provide contractors with a basic knowledge in the fundamental working practices, installation options and regulatory requirements for micro-renewable energy and water conservation technologies. Emma Clancy, CEO of CertSure – the
joint venture company created by the ECA/ESC partnership – commented: ‘Our customers have always been at the heart of this partnership and when
we launched we said there would be benefits for everyone. ‘The register and free training are
both in line with this commitment and we look forward to rolling out a programme of other benefits over time. ‘The renewables industry is set
to be a big market for electrical contractors over the next few years. By providing free training in this area we are ensuring our contactors are well set to take advantage. We want our customers to be the best in the business and we commit to our promise of promoting them extensively to specifiers of electrical work.’ See

EU mandate to charge up EV market
The EU mandate on electric vehicle (EV) charging points provides the political leadership that is urgently needed if the market is to grow, the ECA has said. Under the EU Clean Energy policy, launched on 24
January, the UK is required to increase the number of EV charging points to 122,000 by 2020 – an increase of more than 1,700 per cent on 2011 estimates of 700 charging points across the UK. Paul Reeve, ECA head of Business Policy and Practice,
commented: ‘The latest EU initiative sets challenging, but binding, national targets for electric vehicle charging points. It is obvious that building a successful UK charging infrastructure cannot simply be left to the market. We need political leadership to break the vicious “low range, low demand” cycle that currently blights electric vehicle sales. Major investment in our electric transport supply infrastructure will also boost GDP and jobs, and cut carbon.’
