awardspreview Studio of the Year

SNAP, LONDON

Snap is an independent recording studio based in north London that combines the very best of yesteryear with the best of today. Set up in 2010, the simple aim was to offer uncompromising quality and facilities, traditional values and a unique, creative vibe, all at an affordable price. The studio is centred around a 1972 Neve analogue console, and since opening, Snap has attracted leading UK artists, ranging from Kate Bush to Baaba Maal, Coldplay to Matthew Herbert and Snow Patrol to The Kaiser Chiefs.

BRITISH GROVE, LONDON

British Grove is owned by Mark Knopfler and has to be one of the finest state-of-the-art studios to be constructed in recent times. Extraordinarily British Grove has been built to encompass the best of the two recording worlds, incorporating analogue and digital equipment maintained to the highest standards by a great technical team comprising engineers trained in Abbey Road, Air and Decca facilities. Recent successful albums have included Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale, Eric Clapton, and movies Gravity and World War Z, together with pre-recorded music for the opening and closing Olympic ceremonies.

ASTAR STUDIOS, LANCASHIRE

Astar Studios is celebrating its fifth anniversary year. The studio owned by international songwriter and producer Andy Ross was purpose built inside an industrial unit in Heywood, Lancashire and designed with the emphasis on what matters – the recording environment. Andy wanted to engage with the growing independent sector, by offering: affordable high-end recording; professional, 360º services; artist support. Astar also operates a graduate placement programme with the University of Huddersfield and partners the Exposure Music Awards.

WISSELOORD, NETHERLANDS

A unique venture between partners: all leading members of the pro-audio industry: API, Avid Eggleston Works, Euphonix, PMC, Prism Sound, SPL, Antelope, Grimm Audio, Lavry, Krell, JV Acoustics. With a Grammy in the first year of reopening things are heading in the right direction making Wisseloord the “place to be”.

Why are you sponsoring the first Pro Sound Awards? The awards will bring together the key companies and individuals in our industry. With such a rich heritage in high-end audio and studio recording, it’s only right that we’re there as the representative manufacturer for the Studio category.

What has your company done recently that’s been particularly rewarding to your client(s)? Focusrite continues to bring high- quality and innovative products to the market. We focus on offering unrivalled support and aftercare for our products, helping to commit to our intention of being with the customer throughout their careers (or hobbies!).

I recently completed a PhD in audio- related research and was also included in the long list for Music Week’s recent ‘30 Under 30’ for young music industry executives. I’m very proud of both.

If you could give an award to any ONE person for any ONE achievement RIGHT NOW, who and what would it be? I would vote for Erik Breuer and the team at Red Bull Music Academy for their efforts in developing exceptional new recording studios and facilities across the world. Their investment of time, money and effort has been fundamental in exposing new audiences to high-end recording and music production. uk.focusrite.com

WIGWAM ACOUSTICS

The Wigwam Acoustics Installations team consists of Mick Spratt, Tim Mortimer, Phil Goldsworthy, David Orridge and Nigel Comrie. “With over 30 years of experience in the audio industry, Wigwam has all the resources and knowledge needed to tackle a range of installation projects, from theatres and clubs to houses of worship,” says the company. Two examples of recent projects are separate church installations in Danbury and Manchester: Wigwam supplied full audio, visual and lighting solutions for both. On completion of a job, Wigwam’s team of service engineers is “ready to tend to client needs” and most call-outs are handled “within 24 hours”, it claims.

SOLIFLEX SVENSKA

Jan Setterberg and Fredrik Setterberg are joint owners of Soliflex Svenska, a Swedish consulting and project management company working in electroacoustics, sound system simulation, design and programming, and voice alarms. They are certified Level 1 users of Q-Sys and can also carry out high-level programming of MediaMatrix Nion systems. Recent projects have included programming the audio system for the GE innovation centre in Dhahran Techno Valley, Saudi Arabia, tackling reverberation issues at the State Mosque in Qatar, and specifying and fitting a school auditorium in Molndal, Sweden.

STAGE ELECTRICS

Stage Electrics’ Installations Department has been operating successfully within the venue installations sector for many years. Recent projects include a high-quality but visually unobtrusive sound reinforcement system at Glyndebourne Opera House, and a multi-use theatre at St Lawrence College in Ramsgate. In order to comply with health & safety regulations, Stage Electrics’ experienced health & safety manager, Liz Brathwaite, works closely with the installations team to ensure all staff are fully aware of their obligations to safety and of best practice.

‘FRIENDS ARENA’ TEAM

This nomination extends to consultants Steve Liddle and Ingmar Olsson, integrator James Hurst of LBI Projects, and David Howe from Bosch Prosound UK. Having Howe on board to design the control system GUI was a key factor in the selection of Bosch audio equipment for the project at Sweden’s national football stadium. David’s innovative GUI designs use architectural drawings and a topological approach to make the job as simple as possible for the operator. The installation is reported to have been completed on time, on budget and entirely in accordance with the project brief.
