welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT

HERE’S A PREDICAMENT and I genuinely invite your thoughts on a solution.

For my birthday a couple of weeks ago, a group of us headed to a local pub with a beer garden. As the evening progressed, I noticed one of the bar staff with a tally counter, monitoring how many people were trotting in and out of the back door. It transpired that the garden was limited to a maximum of 50 people. For some health and safety reason? No. Because of the noise levels.

“What could the barstaff do, ask everyone to ‘shush’ and come inside?”

The pub is slap-bang in the middle of a residential area, and the neighbours have been getting upset: complaints about noise, covert filming of drinkers, letters to the council, and so on. In order to address the issue, the authorities have told the landlord to permit no more than 50 people to drink al fresco. I found myself having to talk to one of my birthday guests while he stood on the threshold, waiting for someone to leave the pub so he could enter the garden. One in, one out. No exceptions. Dwelling in the pro-audio world where the measurement and observation of loudness levels is such a hot topic, the pub situation makes me incredulous. But what can they do? If there was a loudness meter on the wall, as so many clubs and venues are now required to install, how would it help? If a certain limit was reached, what could the barstaff do, ask everyone to ‘shush’ or come inside? I feel for the owner, I really do. If he wants to keep the beer garden, I guess limiting the headcount is the only solution. But it still makes me want to head round there with a coachload of Trappist monks and negotiate getting 51 of them into the back. Or turn up just after opening time, with no one else there, and have a quiet pint while I let off my airhorn. See how that pans out. Dave Robinson
