Live/Touring Sound – Engineer of the Year BEN HAMMOND

ANTHONY KING

Ben is Deaf Havana’s FOH engineer of choice. The fast-rising UK rockers – who supported Bruce Springsteen at Hard Rock Calling in June – have relied on

Hammond since early in their career. Hammond was a key player in the acoustic ‘An Evening With Deaf Havana’ tour in April 2013, when the band played to rave reviews. The last six months have also seen Jim work with long-standing clients The Blackout and Duff McKagan’s Loaded.

King was nominated independently by France’s Gauthier Dalle, for creating “a brilliant and punchy sound” for the recent Depeche Mode tour. Brit Row’s Bryan Grant seconded the nomination: “Anthony King has proven himself to be one of the world’s most talented engineers on the road today. Over the past decade he has consistently delivered top quality audio for acts such as Beck, Depeche Mode, and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.”

And what’s been rewarding to your own business, lately? We’re currently implementing a new CRM system that will enable us to provide our customers with an even faster, more streamlined service.

Do you have any awards of which you and your team are proud? Fineline are current holders of the Multi-Media Golf Challenge Trophy and one of our underwriters once won (TV quiz) Blockbusters!

If you could give an award to any ONE person for any ONE

achievement RIGHT NOW, who and what would it be? Amanda Donnelly who comforted soldier Lee Rigby after the Woolwich attack, as her actions served to remind us that we are all human regardless of our political or religious beliefs. www.fineline.co.uk

Live/Touring Sound sponsored by JIM WARREN

For years, Radiohead have been innovators in the music scene. “Without an amazing front of house engineer to replicate the band’s sound production to the minutest detail with exquisite skill, for the captive audience in their live arenas, the band would only be half of the icon it is,” writes Phil Kielty of Liverpool’s Adlib Audio. “Jim’s amazing digital knowledge and fantastic ears make their live show what it is today. An amazing live engineer, and a gentleman too.”

Live/Touring Sound – Tour Sound Production

AUDIO ELECTRONICS MATTIJSEN For the coronation of KingWillem-Alexander, Amsterdam

On 30 April 2013, Prince Willem- Alexander became the Netherlands’ first King in more than a century after his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated following 33 years on the throne. One hundred thousand people crowded into Amsterdam’s Museumplein to watch the event, which featured a grand finale performance by André Rieu and his Orchestra. AEM provided the complex frequency co-ordination for artists, production, outside broadcasters and ENG-crews at the venue. Between production requirements and relevant other users, more than 300 frequencies had to be managed.

CAPITAL SOUND For Mumford & Sons UK Arena Tour

“We have been privileged to be the audio supplier to Mumford and Sons for the past three years,” says Capital Sound. “From the off, it has been obvious that sound production is a high priority and that engineer Chris Pollard will do everything he can to achieve perfection.” Cap Sound formed a relationship with Chris, introduced him to the Martin Audio MLA system, and supplied him with a refurbished Midas XL4 console and four racks of the very best of inserts and FX. “December 11, 12 – London O2 Arena with Mumford & Sons proved to be a pinnacle in audio achievement with two amazing sounding, sold-out shows.”

ADLIB AUDIO For the Script Arena Tour

Adlib began working with The Script four years ago as they were on the rise. With Ian Quinn as tour manager, Bob O’Brien as production manager and Richard Nicholson as FOH engineer. The Script went from theatres to sold-out arenas and a 65,000-capacity Aviva Stadium Gig, plus shows in the US through to Japan. The same L-Acoustics K1 rig was used for Radiohead & Bon Iver in arenas and “achieved spectacular results. All of the team strive for sound perfection throughout each and every part of each arena and venue,” says Adlib.

SSE AUDIO GROUP For Jesus Christ Superstar

In the Autumn of 2013 a new and exciting version of Jesus Christ Superstar took to UK arena venues, realising Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ambition to stage the show with the rock treatment he had always envisaged. Fortunately, the production team saw the value in using a rental company with rock touring experience – SSE Audio Group has worked in live production for 37 years. The project, with Roger Lindsey at FOH, resulted in a number of innovations – including a comprehensive headset mic assessment to find a model with sufficient output for the 56 headsets required on stage.

BEN FINDLAY

FOH engineer for the Peter Gabriel Back to Front Tour, where the sound has been described as “faultless”. With his studio background, Ben is said to deliver a live mix that is “thoughtful”, giving attention to detail that the artists deserve. Mix magazine (USA) referred to Ben as ‘veteran FOH engineer’, which only highlights his skills as an ear-pleaser…
