Live/Touring Sound – After Sales Support DIGICO

MARK SAUNDERS (Sennheiser)

As well as being on hand during the summer festivals, Mark Saunders (left) from Sennheiser’s artist relations team supports many acts, from those who are up and coming, on their first proper tours, through to arena and stadium headliners. As well as working on individual engineer’s projects, he has also been involved in many major ‘one off’ events over the years, including Live 8, Live Earth, a variety of Children In Need concerts, Help For Heroes and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert, working alongside major league audio hire companies that use Sennheiser equipment on a regular basis. Saunders received two additional testimonials to support his entry.

DiGiCo’s commitment to global support is part of its standard sales package. With a trained distribution channel around the world on hand to support local and international production, DiGiCo invests a substantial amount of time travelling around the world to connect with our customers. The company’s informal motto is, ‘DiGiCo never sleeps and never takes a holiday, we just relocate’. “As a result, our customers are very loyal to the brand and we are loyal to them,” says the company.

SOUNDCRAFT

“Since we purchased our Vi6,” writes a veteran sound engineer, “they’ve always been very quick to respond to any queries we’ve had; and recently we dry-hired the console out and the stage box went down – I was on another show in Denmark, so my boss made the call, got put straight through to the right person, and within just over an hour, they’d got another stage box straight out of their demo room down in Potters Bar down to the venue in Essex. That’s what I call service.”

MIDAS

“When my desk caught a pint of beer several years ago it was welcomed back to Midas, renovated, repaired and even improved,” writes a sound engineering professional. “This was a desk that was over 20 years old and parts were still in stock and the repair was made. To still be supporting a desk that old is a great tribute to the company. I have also had great support on brand new products. I have been able to call up service and get advice and the advice I was given was always spot on, practical and well explained.”

Studio – Engineer of the Year

SIMON RHODES Abbey Road

Rhodes recorded and mixed Tom Newman’s score to Skyfall at Abbey Road Studios. This involved taking Tom’s sketches and recording dozens of “rhythmic, melodic and exotic layers” over the top to create the incredible textures of excitement and colour demanded by Sam Mendes. The orchestra was the last element and Rhodes was tasked to mix it into 31 stems, running over three Pro Tools systems.

MARK WINTERBURN Edge Recording Studios

“If there was a young engineer/producer deserving of this award it would be Mark Winterburn. A natural, he has proved in a short space of time, he was born to do this.” So says John Delf, sound engineer and owner of Edge Recording Studios in Cheshire. In six months Winterburn went from tea-boy to key engineer/mixer on Plan B’s Number 1, Mercury Prize, MOBO and BRIT nominated album Ill Manors. Since then he has worked with New Order, Danny O’Donoghue (The Script) and many others including Roller Trio, also nominated for the Mercury Prize last year.
