CONRAD FLETCHER AND THE MIXBUS AUDIO TEAM For NT Live


Sound supervisor Conrad Fletcher has nominated his team of


“outstandingly talented people” for this year’s award. The team (Fletcher, sound supervisor dialogue mixer Paul Stannering, radio mics and ‘wig liaison’ Tracy Cambell, technical guarantor and Ed Ferguson from the National Theatre ) produce the sound for the NT Live series of live broadcasts to cinemas worldwide, translating a live theatre play into a full surround cinematic experience. In the last year, productions included


BAFTA award-winning The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time, The Last of The Haussmans, Timon of Athens and This House.


Broadcast Audio – Event of the Year


ITV YORKSHIRE For the Live Episode of Emmerdale, October 2012


On Thursday 17 October 2012, ITV broadcast a 60-minute, live episode of the popular soap. Chris Greaves (operational head of sound, Leeds) says his crew of 14, plus 28 freelance sound engineers, worked together to produce a “flawless” audio track complemented by superb pictures. “Around 25 boom poles and 20 concealed microphones, seven sound supervisors, 30 floor crew and 2 grams operators feeding to the main mix. The live drama was all on location, with some areas 50 or 100m apart, and transmitted with no faults or mistakes. The crews across all departments worked as one. It was a privilege to be a part of such a hard-working team!”


RIEDEL For the Red Bull Stratos Project


The Red Bull Stratos, Felix Baumgartner’s 120,000ft skydive from the edge of space was a mission that transcended human limits. For the production, Riedel Communications furnished the fibre-based video and signal distribution systems, as well as the wireless video links from the capsule’s onboard cameras, enabling the stunning pictures delivered from the Red Bull Stratos capsule. Riedel provided the entire communications solution for this record-breaking project, integrating wireless and wired digital intercom systems. Riedel has already been awarded a Sports Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding New Approaches Sports Event Coverage for the project.


Broadcast Audio – Facility of the Year GOLDCREST POST


HACKENBACKER


Over the past year, Goldcrest Post has won Oscar, BAFTA, BAFTA Craft, CAS, MPSE and MASA awards for sound mix and editorial talent as well as ADR contribution to sound. Goldcrest Post’s team and facility success are intricately linked and to celebrate one without the other would be illogical. Theatre refurbishments and investment in new technology two years ago helped attract top sound professionals such as Adrian Rhodes who set up a new Sound Editorial Department and ADR mixer Peter Gleaves from a leading competitor. Goldcrest expanded the client base beyond its core in film into high-end broadcast dramas including sound editorial and mixing on The Hollow Crown, The Challenger and Mad Dogs.


Director Michael Samuels once again chose Hackenbacker’s award-winning audio post- production team to handle the audio post for his new four-part drama series The Fear, which screened on terrestrial television in December. Hackenbacker was responsible for the entire audio posting for one of the BBC’s flagship Christmas programmes – a long-form 3D scripted adaptation of David Walliams’ children’s novel Mr Stink – as well as the entire audio post-production for Murder on the Home Front, a two-part drama series produced by Carnival Films for ITV and directed by Geoffrey Sax.


RED TX For Sound of Change Live, Twickenham, UK


Broadcast audio specialists Red TX played a vital role in ensuring that June 2013’s Sound of Change Live concert at Twickenham Stadium was successfully broadcast to more than 150 countries. With its Red I and Red II trucks on site plus a crew of seven, Red TX had to cope with the complexity of the live broadcast and the fast turnaround between acts performing on four different stages. According to Red TX director Tim Summerhayes, Sound of Change Live was the biggest and most complex live broadcast event the company has handled for quite a while. Red TX worked with Britannia Row (in charge of the live sound), and Visions, which has its own OB truck at the event.


SENNHEISER For The Eurovision Song Contest


For the 58th Eurovision Song Contest in May 2013, a television audience of around


125 million experienced the songs in optimum quality thanks to Sennheiser and MM Communications, the latter of which preconfigured and supplied Sennheiser Digital 9000 wireless systems for the show. In total around 140 channels were co- ordinated for in-ears; all the microphones used in the arena and microphones used in the green room, Press Centre and ENG crews.


THE X FACTOR SOUND TEAM


“Obviously the X Factor Sound Team should win this award!” writes Robert Edwards, sound director of X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, and Celebrity Juice. Edwards’ team produces hours of “gold- standard” live-broadcast sound for ITV’s number one music show for a domestic audience of 12 million, which just celebrated its 10th season. “The audio challenges are huge, using over 90 radio frequencies every week, blending reality and music television, along with international star performances.”


THE BRIT AWARDS 2013 TEAM


For the 19th year running, multi- award


winning sound engineer Toby Alington mixed the live-to-air music from The BRIT Awards 2013. The UK’s largest annual music event was held at the London O2 Arena, and broadcast live on Wednesday 20 February. Sound designer Bruce McLaren and the Floating Earth crew worked alongside Alington to put the live- to-air show together. After the show, John Kaye Cooper, controller of entertainment at ITV, wrote: “Congratulations from all of us at ITV for a superb event and production. It was a great demonstration of how to stage an event of this magnitude… and a terrific television production.” Show ratings were reported to be the highest since 2003.

RED TX For Strictly Come Dancing Live at Wembly Arena


Red TX provides a comprehensive concert recording and broadcast service to the music and television industries. Strictly Come Dancing’s live Wembley Arena show in November 2012 relied on Red TX to work alongside BBC Studios and Post Production sound engineers Tony Revell, Andy Tapley and Richard Sillitoe, providing them with all the facilities they needed to capture and broadcast the audio in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. It was the second time that Red TX had been involved with the Strictly show. The show hit a reported audience peak of some 11.4 million.


BBC S&PP BBC


Studios and Post Production (BBC S&PP)


opened its


standalone post-production facility on Charlotte Street on 28 January. Located in the vibrant W1 post community, the new HD-based, fully tapeless facility gives BBC S&PP a central London launchpad to offer full-service post-production facilities to TV and corporate clients. The six-floor facility is linked to BBC S&PP’s studios at BBC Elstree and Elstree Studios so it can serve live studio productions requiring inserts. Post-production projects asssigned to the new site include Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Matt Lucas Awards, Beat the Pack, Let’s Dance for Comic Relief and Friday Download.


EVOLUTIONS POST


Once again Evolutions provided post- production services to Boundless (part of FremantleMedia UK) for The Apprentice and The Apprentice: You’re Fired. With 12 episodes of both shows and two additional programmes (The Final Five and Why I Fired Them) it is a project with huge amounts of footage. Evolutions has been working on the show since Series 1 and this season has provided online, audio and grading as well as offline facilities and technical support services. At any one time the project has been running 10 suites simultaneously. Evolutions editors working on the project are David Frisby, online editor, and Richard Ashley, dubbing mixer, plus colourist Tim O’Brien.
