Marketing Initiative/Campaign of the Year L-ACOUSTICS

L-Acoustics is running three

campaigns: The 5XT advert shows the new arrival in a baby stroller with the

headline ‘This little one will rock your world’ highlighting the size, power and flexibility of the speaker. ‘Treat Yourself’ is the key concept to ARCS WIDE & ARCS FOCUS, where a reference to having your cake and eating it – “you can come back for seconds, adding slice by slice, until you’re sound-full” – illustrates how users will want to grow their systems. ‘Versatile Performance’ is the slogan for the KIVA Modular Line Source and SB15m LF extension. The campaign shows a speaker wearing a bow-tie, representing classical music, sitting next to the sub wearing a bandana and shades (rock music).

DIGICO

DiGiCo’s products are communicated to customers through provocative advertising and the company’s marketing strategy is a blend of traditional and non-traditional elements. “Our ‘Mugshot’ campaign featured a host of our most active engineers who were officially ‘arrested’ and part of the DiGiCo family as well as the DiGiCo brand,” says the company. Additionally, DiGiCo launched its Online Training vehicle, DiGiCo.tv, in 2012 – the first tutorial of its kind for the pro- audio industry. The tutorials offer a range of education – from a ‘quick start’ for those who have never used a DiGiCo console before to an advanced section for those wanting to learn enhanced features.

THE SPONSORS:PHIL MASSEY general manager, Sennheiser UK

Why are you sponsoring the first Pro Sound Awards? Because Sennheiser likes to get behind new industry initiatives and support those that support us.

What has your company done recently that’s been particularly rewarding to your client(s)? Developed our flagship digital 9000 series, which delivers the finest quality audio of any Sennheiser microphone to date, while ensuring efficient use of spectrum – which is becoming increasingly important.

What has your company done recently that’s been rewarding to your business? Further developed our education programme, which includes a partnership with Buckinghamshire New University, with the university’s main recording studio being renamed The Sennheiser Sound Lab and providing an annual scholarship for a second year student.

Is there someone on your team who has recently won an accolade? Paul Whiting, president of global sales at Sennheiser, has been awarded an honorary Doctorate degree by Buckinghamshire New University as a result of his long-term commitment to the music industry. Paul is one of the company’s true ambassadors, supporting business for over 30 years helping shape the future of audio, based on innovation, culture and passion for excellence.

If you could give an award to any ONE person for any ONE achievement RIGHT NOW, who and what would it be? The late Mark Fisher for his outstanding U2 set designs. en-uk.sennheiser.com

D&B AUDIOTECHNIK

The ‘Frame story’ is d&b’s White range campaign. “Only a carefully and consistently developed brand provides the recipient with a good idea of a company’s attitude, its character and the people behind it,” says d&b. “Good reasons why d&b sends out clearly profiled messages of being different to others. As d&b has talked distinctively about specific concepts, products, people and their skills, with this new White range campaign d&b looks and talks from the customers’ perspective.” The campaign highlights a selection of venues as the framework for the reinforcement task. “So d&b is in the frame: a campaign that puts the applications directly in the picture.”

SOUNDCRAFT STUDER

The ‘It’s all about the Performer’ campaign supported the launch of the Si Performer console as part of the Soundcraft Studer ‘Faces’ programme. Reader analysis of ‘Faces’ in US publications showed awareness of the featured brand in one sector moved up to first/second in the market with 83% recall, reports Soundcraft Studer. Video and promotional material from the Si Performer launch and media event in Soho produced around 16,000 video views alone over the following weeks. Other social media measurements jumped “by over 100%”, says the company. ‘Faces’ has been applied to a variety of promotions, including print and digital advertising, videos and the Soundcraft Studer touring demo truck.

MEET THE SPONSORS:DAN GOLDSTEIN, director of marketing & communications, ISE

Why are you sponsoring the first Pro Sound Awards? Professional audio is playing a more prominent role at ISE year by year, so this is a chance for us to at least partly repay the faith the industry has shown in us. As for the category… If we weren’t sponsoring the champagne, everyone might have ended up having to drink Magners, and that would never do.

What has your company done recently that’s been particularly rewarding to your clients? It’s great to be able to bring new kinds of ISE customers to audio manufacturers in search of fresh markets.

What has your company done recently that’s been rewarding to your business? For ISE 2014 we’re setting up two new theatres on our show floor for free-to- attend education sessions. This should dramatically enhance our event content and it is personally a very rewarding – if demanding – project to work on.

Have your team won any awards of which you are particularly proud? Last year ISE was named the third

Rising Star JAMES HILL

fastest-growing tradeshow in the world. The two events above us were both much smaller, so we were happy to get to number three.

If you could give an award to any ONE person for any ONE achievement RIGHT NOW, who and what for? The German DJ/producer Tensnake for refusing to make his latest single (the wonderful 58BPM) available either to stream or download. It’s on hand- stamped 12-inch vinyl only and will set you back £7.99. But that’s what real music is worth and I’m happy to pay it. www.iseurope.org

Rising Star sponsored by JULIEN PIRRIE

A graduate of Huddersfield University in 2012, James established himself as a core member of the sound engineering teams at two of Sheffield’s prominent live venues –Corporation and West Street Live, becoming the main engineer at the latter. Upon returning to Huddersfield for a final year of university he became the main engineer at Huddersfield’s leading live venue, The Parish. He has also created his own recording company, Hangman Productions, specialising in live recordings, practice room recordings, and mixing/mastering projects. James has recently been approached by Phil Gornell, previous API award winner, to work as a freelance studio engineer at Steel City Studio.

XAVIER STEPHENSON

Since joining Metropolis as an assistant, Xavier has become one of the hardest working and in- demand engineers in the business, honing his skills through assisting on a diverse range of recording sessions such as Eric Clapton, The Who, Bon Jovi, Alicia Keys, U2, Elton John, Dizzee Rascal, Mark Ronson, Paloma Faith, Miles Kane and Beyonce. More recently, he has engineered for Rihanna, Lana del Rey, Example, David Guetta, Rita Ora, Carl Barat (Eyes on Film), King Charles, Editors and The Joy Formidable’s album Wolf’s Law for Atlantic.

After starting as a runner at Goldcrest Post Production it has taken just three years for Julien to become head of Goldcrest Foley as part of Adrian Rhodes’s editorial team. He records, edits and sometimes even works as a Foley artist. Within the first 18 months, Julien and Adrian’s team have won a Sound Editorial BAFTA Craft Award and a MAS Sound Design Award for their work on the BBC Hollow Crown Series. Not to mention numerous other award nominations including a CAS Best Sound Editing on an animation nomination for Aardman’s Pirates! Band Of Misfits.

On a daily basis she answers calls from SSL users with a variety of different problems, while remaining calm and informative at all times. Succeeding as a woman in this male-dominated industry is not easy. With courage and determination Karen has shown it can be done.
