awardspreview EUROPE Pro Sound Awards: meet the sponsors

The lobbying period is now closed, and the Pro Sound Awards team is busily sifting through the entries to determine just which ones make the shortlists. These will then be transferred to our independent judging panel who will deliberate over the final worthy winners. In the meantime, we asked our sponsors about awards and rewards. Here’s what the first four told us

JAMES GORDON, MANAGING DIRECTOR, DIGICO Why are you

sponsoring the first Pro Sound Awards? Sponsoring both the event and the Grand Prix award seemed a suitable contribution to mark the efforts of an individual.

What has DiGiCo done recently that’s been particularly rewarding to your clients? We have been able to further release additional FPGA processing on our range of SD consoles. This free upgrade allows our users to gain extra from their existing investment, while future-proofing it too. And what’s been rewarding to your own business lately? Adding further flexibility with the standalone SD Convert application,

JAMES KING, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING, MARTIN AUDIO

giving engineers a simple way to port sessions across the SD Range. Do you or your team have any awards of which you are proud? We have won multiple industry awards and several Queen’s Awards in the lifetime of the company. A personal one for technical director John Stadius was when he was awarded the Gottelier Award for his contribution to R&D within the industry. If you could give an award to any ONE person for any ONE achievement RIGHT NOW, who would that be and why?

Singling out an individual is almost impossible. DiGiCo has been fortunate to work with some of the best people within our industry, be they the in- house design team or the engineers and sound designers that support and contribute to our future success. www.digico.biz

JAMES LEACH, EUROPEAN TRADE MARKETING MANAGER, SONY PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS EUROPE

Why are you sponsoring the Awards? With innovation at the heart of all that Sony does, choosing to sponsor the Awards from the inception was a natural step, celebrating the commercial and creative successes within the entire pro-audio industry. Our market-leading products meant that sponsoring the Broadcast Category was an obvious choice too. What has Sony done recently that’s been rewarding to your clients? Sony partnered with the new John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, providing production equipment, integration services, consultancy and expertise that will help the development of core skills around music, video and digital production media professionals. This is a project with real added value for young people. And what’s been rewarding to your business lately? The use of our broadcast equipment has been growing. For instance, OB- team, a Norwegian turnkey facility for

TV production, has replaced its existing wireless mic system with Sony DWX. Is there someone in your team who has won an award?

I’m sure he’ll hate me for saying it but a close friend of mine, Dan Robb, European B2B marketing manager within Professional Solutions Europe, has just been listed in the Power 100, Nxt Gen 2013 in Marketing Magazine, which I think is pretty cool. ONE award to ONE person for any ONE achievement: who and why? I’m a huge fan of the Rory Peck awards that Sony sponsor, so I would like to award all of the freelancers that are pushing the boundaries on capturing news stories from around the world! They continuously put themselves in grave amounts of danger. These amazing feats of news gathering really do deserve huge recognition. www.sony.co.uk

Why did Martin Audio get involved? We’re taking the opportunity to help recognise those in the industry that make it a more exciting place to work, and obviously, it being held at the Ministry of Sound makes it a nice tie- in. We’re sponsoring the pre-event drinks – like we needed an excuse to help celebrate! What has Martin Audio done recently that’s been particularly rewarding to your clients? The introduction of MLA Mini has got off to a cracking start, so we believe that opening up this unique technology to wider application use and venue size will bring additional benefits to our customers and the audiences that experience it. What’s been rewarding to your own business lately? We exhibited at InfoComm and the general vibe was that it was our

strongest showing for a number of years. Winning a ‘Best of Show Award’ for MLA Mini rounded it off nicely.

Do you personally have any awards of which you are proud? I came across my ‘Worst Golfer of the Year’ award from my college days not long ago. It’s not something that I’m particularly proud of, but it always makes me smile when I think back to that afternoon in the bunker. ONE award to ONE person for any ONE achievement: who and why? I’d give an award to Dave Grohl for his Sound City documentary: anyone that can do a two-hour movie essentially about a sound console and make it totally enthralling gets my vote. www.martin-audio.com

PAUL ROBSON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF SPECIALIST LEASING COMPANY MEDIALEASE

Why are you sponsoring the Awards? Having been a regular awards sponsor supporting the UK audio industry, we wanted to show our support both for the Awards themselves, but more importantly, to support the nominees who are out there operating the consoles and systems that we are often financing for our rental customers. What has Medialease done for its clients recently? Sometimes the request for financing comes in to us quite late, when the equipment is being delivered, say; and perhaps the clients’ prospective finance provider came up with some unacceptable terms or simply said a late ‘no’. We have gone on to provide last-minute finance solutions to enable those equipment deals to happen. And what’s been rewarding to your own business lately? Most rewarding are the successful tricky deals – a full PA/VA installation into a football/rugby or cricket stadium, or a world tour requiring a

full line array and LED screens. Lately, a pawnbroker wanted us to finance a huge highly spec’d roadside digital signage advertising

screen. Deal done but it WAS complex! Do you personally have any awards of which you are proud? None that I’m going to share with you! ONE award to ONE person for any ONE achievement: who and why? It would be to award Michael and Emily Eavis for creating the fabulous Glastonbury festival, an iconic event and brand recognised the world over. But! As they already have a stack of awards and recognition, let’s celebrate the tireless energy, enthusiasm and sheer long hours of hard work put in at ALL live events, not just the big festivals but by the freelance and employed techies, stage hands, riggers, and crew who make the events so good. www.medialease.com
