welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT
MY TRIP TO see OMD in Hamburg marked the first time I’d spent any time in the city. And because of the rain, which was constant, I didn’t actually get to see much of it.
“Could ViRAY really live up to Chicky’s enthusiasm? The simple answer is yes”
But nothing could stop me from taking in the neon spectacle of the Reeperbahn. My, oh, my. And I thought Frankfurt’s Kaiserstrasse was a pit of prurience. Hamburg certainly wins the crown for shoving sex in your face, whether your want it or not. (“Yes, and I was only asking the way to the station...”) Anyway, safely inside the Hamburg Docks venue, surprises of a more appealing nature awaited me. Having been to the launch of the Coda ViRAY line array last October, and heard how it could perform in a controlled demo space in terms of clarity, detail and sheer power, I was keen to hear it used in anger. FOH engineer Charles ‘Chicky’ Reeves was not short in his praise for the system, as you will discover on p42. Could it really live up to all his enthusiasm, in a divey venue such as the Docks (no offence, Hamburg)? The simple answer is yes. It’s probably the best sound I’ve heard at a gig since, ooh, Bruce Springsteen in Hyde Park in 2009 (first time I heard an L-Acoustics K1, that was) or Orbital at the Big Chill the same year. Of course, gig sound is a combination of quality PA equipment, competent sound engineering and a band who know their stuff. I was highly fortunate that night, then. OMD showed that three decades of performing pop gives you an easy confidence and professionalism. Add to that Chicky’s masterful skills with desk and FX processing, run it through a system such as ViRAY and you simply cannot fail. But I was surprised at just HOW good things can be when it all comes together. Aaand... I was surprised when I didn’t recognise the ex-Kraftwerk bloke backstage before the show. Duh. Dave Robinson
